FULLERTON, California - The Cal State Fullerton Titans just got past the Bowling Green State University softball team this evening (March 13), 7-3 at the Anderson Family Field. What started out as a pitchers duel the first three innings remained a tight game until a fifth inning Titan rally which led to five runs that lifted the Titans past the Falcons.
The Falcon bats got started right away as Rachel Proehl led off the game for BG with a single to center field.
Senior co-captain Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to keep the Titan bats under wrap the first four innings not allowing a single hit. BG was able to retire the Titans in three straight outs in the bottom of the first and second inning.
After Proehl's lead-off single in the first inning the Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the second or third inning.
In the bottom of the third the Titans were able to get their first base runner off of a Falcon error. With two outs and a runner on second Karmen Coffey robbed the Titans of a base hit and a possible run as she snagged a low line drive between first and second off of the bat of Fullerton's Torrie Anderson to end the inning, keep the game 0-0.
With a scoreless game in the top of the fourth the Falcons bats got going once again as freshman Melissa West sparked the BG offense with a one out triple off of the left center fence. Wiemer stepped up to the plate with two outs and hit a single up the middle to driving home West and putting the Falcons on the scoreboard first, 1-0.
The Titan offense was also able to put some runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning off of a two out rally. The Titans strung together four straight singles leading to two Titan runs, giving Cal State Fullerton a 2-1 lead over the Falcons.
Despite a lead-off single to left field from Susan Sontag in the top of the fifth inning the Falcons weren't able to push across any runs.
BG was able to get the first two outs in the bottom of the fifth but another two out rally by the Titans opened up the game. The Titans recorded five runs off of four hits and two Falcon errors extending their lead to six over the Falcons, 7-1.
The Falcons didn't give up as Proehl led-off for the Orange and Brown in the top of the sixth with a single to center field. Then with one out West was given first base off of a base-on-balls. The Titans were able to get the second out of the inning with West still on first base, bring Wiemer to plate. Wiemer then annihilated a two run homer that soared over the right center fence, which is said to be one of the furthest homers in right field at the Anderson Family Field, to cut the Titans lead to four, 7-3. The homer marks Wiemer's second of the season and 25th of her career only one shy of tying the BG career record.
Once again the Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to make a quick inning of the Titan with a three-up, three-down inning in the bottom of the six.
Coffey got a one out walk to give the Falcons' their first base runner in the top of the seventh. Then with two outs Coffey then stole second putting the Falcons in scoring position. Haleigh Bielstein pinch hit and earned a walk to give the Falcons another base runner, but BG wasn't able to score before the Titans got the final out of the inning. The Falcons ended up falling, 7-3 to host Cal State Fullerton.
The Falcon offense had two players recorded multiple hit games, Wiemer who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two run homer and Proehl who went 2-for-4 with her third multiple hit game of the season. Also posting hits for the Falcons were West with her fourth extra base hit of the season and Sontag.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow (March 14) against No. 25/24 Florida State at 11:00 a.m. and then finish their stay in Fullerton, California against No. 9/8 Oklahoma on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
