ATLANTA, Ga. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller has been named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Region 4 Coach of the Year, the WBCA office announced Tuesday (March 17).
Miller, who earns the regional honor for the third time in the last four years, is now a finalist for the WBCA National Coach-of-the-Year award.
Miller is part of a veritable coaching Who's Who, as the other NCAA Division I regional winners and national C-O-Y finalists include Geno Auriemma (Connecticut - Region 1), Sue Semrau (Florida State - Region 2), Nell Fortner (Auburn - Region 3), Sherri Coale (Oklahoma - Region 5), Jim Foster (Ohio State - Region 6), Elaine Elliott (Utah - Region 7) and Tara VanDerveer (Stanford - Region 8).
The winners are selected through a two-level process. The first level is by region, in which coaches from each WBCA geographical region vote for their respective top coach. If a coach has been selected as Regional Coach of the Year, they advance as a finalist to the national level of the selection process along with the other Regional Coaches of the Year in their respective division.
The national winners will be honored on Monday, April 2 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time during the Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year Luncheon in the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Grand Ballroom. The luncheon is part of the 2009 WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women's Final Four®.
Miller, a native of Girard, Pa., has an overall record of 178-72 in his eighth season at the BGSU helm. He has posted a 94-34 Mid-American Conference record during that time.
This season, all Miller has done is lead the Falcons to a 28-4 overall record, a 15-1 MAC mark and the team's fifth-straight regular-season title and national postseason. BGSU has won 28 of the last 30 games, and appeared in the MAC Tournament's championship game for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Miller has been named MAC Coach of the Year in an unprecedented five consecutive seasons. BGSU has a total of 136 wins in those five years, an average of more than 27 wins per season. BG's average win total (27.2) is greater than the program's total number of losses (27) during that five-year span.
The Falcons earned an automatic berth in the Women's National Invitation Championship, and BGSU has received a first-round bye and a second-round home game in the 48-team tourney. Miller and the Falcons will host either Canisius or Syracuse at Anderson Arena, with date and time to be announced.
