CLEVELAND, OHIO - Bowling Green State University sophomore pitcher Matt Malewitz was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today. Malewitz earned the honor for games played between March 9-15.
The Grand Rapids, Mich. native tossed a complete game one-hitter on March 13 as the Falcons posted a 3-0 victory over Northern Iowa on their spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. Malewitz faced the minimum 27 batters in his 95-pitch gem. A clean fourth inning single was the only hit he allowed as no Northern Iowa player advanced past first base in the game.
He retired the side in order in the first, second, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. The BG left-hander had one strikeout and two walks in the game and he retired Northern Iowa batters on 13 fly balls and eight ground outs.
Malewitz will start one of the games this weekend as the Falcons host Western Michigan in a weekend series that opens conference play. He has a 1-1 record this season in four starts that cover 22.2 innings. He has 12 strikeouts and opposition batters are hitting .184 against him.
Malewitz is in his first season in a BG uniform after transferring from Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College where he played one season.
