CHICAGO, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, but the host University of Illinois at Chicago captured five of six singles matches to down the Falcons, 5-2, Friday afternoon (March 20) in the Windy City. The non-conference dual match was held at Evergreen Racquet and Fitness.
With the win, UIC improves to 5-5 on the dual-match season, while the Falcons end the non-league portion of the schedule with a 7-3 dual-match record.
Falcon senior Stefanie Menoff picked up the lone singles win for the Brown and Orange, defeating Amy Jellish by 6-2, 6-0 scores at the fifth flight. With the win, Menoff now has 77 career singles victories at BGSU. She has moved into a tie for third place on the career list, just two singles wins shy of tying the school record.
Menoff had teamed with classmate Libby Harrison for an 8-3 win at the third doubles flight earlier in the afternoon. The tandem of juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel also picked up a doubles win, outlasting their UIC opponents, 8-6, at the second flight, to give BG the doubles point.
But, the Flames won singles matches at each of the top-four flights in straight sets, and also won the sixth-flight contest in two sets, to take the win.
The Falcons begin the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule Saturday afternoon (March 21), taking on Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
NOTES
* Friday marked the first time this season that the Falcons have lost when fielding a complete lineup ... in BGSU's other two losses, the team was forced to forfeit the matches at the sixth singles and third doubles flights due to injuries.
* Menoff's 77th career singles win moves her into a tie for third on that school list with Ashley Jakupcin (2004-07), her former teammate and the older sister of Menoff's classmate, Kelsey Jakupcin.
* Menoff needs just two more singles victories to tie the school's career record ... currently, that record of 79 singles wins is shared by Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) and Julie Weisblatt (1994-97).
* Menoff now has a career singles record of 77-18.
* Junior Samantha Kintzel picked up the 50th doubles win of her career ... Kintzel is tied for 19th on that BGSU career list.
* Three members of the seven-player BGSU team are natives of Illinois ... Kintzel, Menoff and junior Katia Babina all were playing in their home state on Friday ... the other four team members all are natives of Ohio.
