Panthers Down the Falcons with a Late Inning Rally
The Falcons started off day two of the Buzz Classic against Georgia State, as BG looked to remain undefeated in their all-time series. The Orange and Brown weren't able to hold the Panthers losing 5-0 in what turned out to be a defensive battle for the first five innings.
The Panthers got their bats going early recording a lead-off hit in the first, second, third and fourth innings. Each of the first four innings for the Panthers looked very similar with a lead-off hit followed by putting runners in scoring position but a combined effort by the Falcon defense and senior Hayley Wiemer on the mound the Falcons kept the Panthers scoreless.
BG got their offense started in the bottom of the second innings as Wiemer lined a single through the left side to give the Falcons their first base runner but they weren't able to score.
With the both teams scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning the Falcon offense once again got going as Karmen Coffey hit a line drive single to the right side of the infield. Melissa West then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Coffey to second base bringing Wiemer to the plate. Like many other teams Georgia State didn't want to take any chances with Wiemer as they intentionally walked her putting runners on first and second for BG with one out. The Panther were able to record the final two outs getting out of the inning unscathed with the game still tied 0-0.
Wiemer and the Falcons made a quick inning of the Panther in the top of fifth with a one, two, three inning.
The Panthers were finally able to break the scoreless game in the top of the sixth with a homer to left center taking a 1-0 lead. The next batter for Georgia State reach first as she was hit by a pitch. Lindsay Arney then robbed the Panthers of an extra base hit with a diving catching in left center to give the Falcons one out. Two Panther hits and two walks then led to three more runs for Georgia State, 4-0. The Panthers scored their final run on a passed ball taking a 5-0 lead over BG. Coffey once again got the Falcons started with another lead-off single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the sixth but BG wasn't able to put any runs on the board.
The Falcons were able to make another quick inning in the top of the seventh with a three up-three down inning, giving BG one more chance to score some runs. Susan Sontag was able to get the Falcon offense started with a single to left field, but the Falcons were kept scoreless falling to the Panthers, 5-0.
The Falcon offense was led by Coffey going 2-for-3 against the Panthers. Also recording a hit for BG were Wiemer and Sontag.
Great Danes Shutout Falcons
The BGSU softball team fell to Albany, 10-0 in five innings, in their first meeting in program history.
Albany scored their 10 runs off of 10 hits and one Falcon error in the first two innings. The Falcons bounced back and held Albany in the third and fourth in only giving up one hit in each inning. Picking up the win for the Great Danes was Leah McIntosh, who remains undefeated, 7-0 on the season.
Melissa Bott now 1-1 on the season struck out three batters in two innings of work, while Zada Lines struck out two batters in two innings of work.
