WOODSTOCK, Georgia - The Bowling Green State University softball team wrapped up their stay at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta, Georgia this afternoon (March 8) as Austin Peay edged out the Falcons, 1-0.
The match-up between the Falcons and the Lady Govs turned out to be a pitchers duel with both sides only giving up three hits. Hayley Wiemer threw for the Falcons from the circle fanning 10 batters, matching her career high.
The Orange and Brown offense got started in the first inning as Melissa West nailed a line drive double to left center.
The Lady Govs also got their bats started early as they opened with a lead-off single up the middle. Austin Peay had their first scoring chance with a runner on second base and no outs but a combination of Wiemer in the circle and solid Falcon defense BG was able to get the next three batters to keep the Lady Govs scoreless.
The Lady Govs scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning off of one hit and one Falcon error. Austin Peay recorded a one out single to center field, and then with two outs the Lady Govs stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, finally scoring on a Falcon error.
In the top of third BG got their next base runner as Rachel Proehl was hit by a pitch with two outs, but Austin Peay was able to get the third out before the Falcons could get anything going.
Wiemer and the Falcon defense put together three solid innings of defense with one, two, three innings in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth.
In the top of the fourth Wiemer was given first base on a base-on-balls with one out. Lauren Rockich came in to pinch run for the Falcons as Zada Lines laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Rockich to second base but once again the Falcons were kept scoreless.
The Falcon offense got going once again in the top of the sixth as Proehl led-off with a single. West sacrificed her over to second base putting the Falcons in scoring position with only one out. Susan Sontag then singled to left field but Proehl was thrown out at third base. Smart base running by Sontag put her at second for the Falcons with two outs bringing Wiemer to the plate. For the second time this weekend the Falcons' opponent didn't take any chances and intentionally walked Wiemer putting runners on first and second for BG with two outs.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning Austin Peay recorded a single to put a runner on base. A BG error then gave the Lady Govs runners on first and second with one out. Wiemer fought back fanning the next two batters to hold the Lady Govs.
Going into the top of the seventh and down 1-0 the Falcons weren't able to get their bats going eventually falling to Austin Peay.
Leading the Falcon sticks were Proehl and West each going 1-for-2 on the day. Recording the other Falcon base hit was Sontag going 1-for-3.
Sontag was named to the Buzz Classic All-Tournament team after leading the Falcons with a .417 batting average and a .583 slugging percentage with five hits, including two doubles and one run scored.
The Falcons return to action as they head to the Judy Garman Classic (March 12-15) in Fullerton, California for spring break. The Falcons will open the tournament against Texas (March 12) at 11:00 a.m.
