Falcons Travel the MAC West

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After a successful 3-1 opening weekend at the Meserve Softball Field, head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons, 7-14 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, will pack their bags to travel the Mid-American Conference West division. The Orange and Brown will kick off the weekend with a Friday (April 3) double-header against Western Michigan at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will then take on Northern Illinois in a two game series Saturday (April 4) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 5) at 1:00 p.m.

ON DECK FOR THE FALCONS...
Western Michigan • Broncos • 4/3 • 1:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.
The Falcons will continue MAC cross-over play against the West division in a double-header against Western Michigan ... the Broncos are currently 6-13 overall and 3-1 in the MAC, tied for second in the MAC West ... in opening weekend of the MAC play the Broncos swept Ohio (4-0, 3-1) and split with Akron (7-0, 0-2) ... the Broncos are one of the two teams in the MAC West to lead the Falcons in the all-time series, 28-40 ... the Falcons are currently on a three game winning streak after defeating the Broncos at the MAC Tournament 5-2 in 2007 and then sweeping them at home last season (2-1, 2-1) ... the last meeting between the two teams was last season as the Falcons swept the Broncos 2-1 in both games of the two game series to wrap-up their home schedule.
IN THE HOLE FOR THE FALCONS...
Northern Illinois • Huskies • 4/4 • 2:00 p.m. & 4/5 • 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons will wrap-up trip against the MAC West with a two game series against Northern Illinois ... the Huskies are currently 9-17 and 4-0 in the MAC a top the West division, after sweeping Akron (3-2, 4-3) and Ohio (7-4, 8-0) in opening weekend of the MAC play ... the Falcons lead the Huskies 19-13 in the all-time series ... the Falcons are on a three game winning streak against the Huskies on their home field, winning four of the last five match-ups on the road and 10 of the last 12 overall meetings between the two teams ... the last meeting between the teams was last season on the BGSU Softball Field where the Falcons split a double-header with the Huskies, winning game one 5-2 and losing an extra inning battle in game two 3-2 ... the loss marked the Falcons' only loss on their home field last season posting an 8-1 record at the BGSU Softball Field.
WIEMER BECOMES NEW BG HOME RUN LEADER
Senior co-captain Hayley Wiemer became the BG all-timer home run leader as she crushed two homers in game one of the Falcons' MAC opener double-header against Toledo (March 26). She hit her 27th and 28th career homers against the Rockets, marking the fourth time she recorded two home runs in a game, the only Falcon to do so on four separate occasions. Wiemer recorded her record-breaking long ball in the bottom of the third inning. With no outs and one runner on the Rockets tried to keep the ball away from Wiemer as she was thrown two straight balls but the next pitch Wiemer blasted out of the park in right field, becoming the new career home run leader in BG history. The homer marked Wiemer's fourth of the season and the 27th of her career. In the bottom of the fifth inning she struck stepping to the plate and blasting another line drive home run that soared over the center field fence, her fifth of the season and 28th of her career.
FALCONS GOING STREAKING
The Falcons are going streaking now on a three game winning streak with four players on hitting streaks. Leading the way is freshman Rachel Proehl who is currently on a five game hitting streaking, including two multiple hit games as she leads the Falcons with 22 hits. Fellow freshman Melissa West and sophomore Zada Lines have been consistent at the plate both on four game hitting streaks for BG with 15 and 14 hits respectively. West's four game hitting streak includes back-to-back multiple hit games. Also on a hitting streak is Susan Sontag now on a three game streak.
"FRESH" BATS
Freshman Rachel Proehl and Melissa West have brought "fresh" bats to the Falcon line-up this season. The rookies have recorded a combined effort of 37 hits on the season, nearly one-third of the Falcon offense. Proehl leads the Falcons with 22 hits while West is third on the team with 15.
FALCONS A TOP THE MAC
The Falcons now 7-14 overall and 2-0 in the MAC are sitting a top of the East division tied with Kent State. The Orange and Brown can also be found in the top-10 in the conference 12 times in the overall statistics, including four in the top-three and found in the top-10 19 times in conference only statistics, including 12 in the top-three. As a team the Falcons lead the MAC in batting average (.302), slugging percentage (.604) and ERA (0.00) in conference games. Individually senior Hayley Wiemer is the a top the MAC in on base percentage and slugging percentage overall and in conference games. Overall she boasts a .475 on base percentage and .739 slugging percentage and in conference play she has a .667 on base percentage and a 2.000 slugging percentage.
FALCONS SWEEP ARCH-RIVAL TOLEDO
The Bowling Green State University softball team lit up the skies over the Meserve Softball Field with five long balls in their MAC opener (March 28) sweep over arch-rival Toledo, 6-4 and 9-1. The Falcons continued their dominance of the Rockets as they extending their winning steak to nine games overall and five on their home turf and sweeping Toledo for the fourth straight season. The Falcons also remain undefeated against Toledo during BG's home opening weekend as they are up 10-0 against the Rockets.
FALCONS BREAK EVEN WITH BOILERMAKERS
The Bowling Green State University softball team officially opened the 2009 season at home Thursday afternoon (March 26) on the newly renamed Meserve Softball Field as they broke even with Purdue dropping game one 17-2 in five innings and bouncing back to defeat the Boilermakers 8-7 in game two. The Falcons recorded their second victory over Purdue this season after defeating them at the Buzz Classic 6-5 in eight innings (March 6), posting a 2-1 record against their Big Ten opponent this season.
SALSBURG AGAINST THE MAC
In two seasons at the helm of the Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg leads seven of the 11 series against Mid-American Conference opponents, is tied with one and only trails- in three. Salsburg and the Falcons lead Akron (3-0), Ball State (5-0), Buffalo (2-0), Miami (4-1), Northern Illinois (4-1), Toledo (6-0) and Western Michigan (4-1) and are tied with Central Michigan (2-2). The three teams to lead the Salsburg and the Falcons are Eastern Michigan (2-4), Kent State (1-3) and Ohio (3-4).
FALCONS AGAINST THE MAC
The Falcons have dominated their MAC East division foes as they own all but one all-time series record. The Falcons lead Akron (41-20-1), Buffalo (14-3), Miami (50-36) and Ohio (50-36). The only team in the MAC East division to lead the Falcons is Kent State (41-49-1). In the MAC West division the Falcons lead four out of the six opponents in the all-time series. The Orange and Brown lead Ball State (47-27), Eastern Michigan (46-34), Northern Illinois (19-13) and arch-rival Toledo (56-33). The only two West teams to lead the Falcons are Central Michigan (16-63) and Western Michigan (28-40).
