BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Despite out hitting the RedHawks 5-2 this afternoon (April 11) the Falcons lost game one of the two game series, 1-0. Miami came out on top of the close battle between the two teams as the Falcons fall to 7-21 overall and 2-7 in the Mid-American Conference.
Senior Hayley Wiemer started her 20th game of the season in the circle for the Falcons. A combined effort from Wiemer and the Falcon defense kept the RedHawks' bats under wrap only giving up two hits on the day and retiring Miami one, two, three in four out of the seven innings.
The Falcons were able to retire the RedHawks quickly in the top of the first inning with a three-up, three-down inning.
Offensively the Orange and Brown bats got started early as Wiemer recorded the first hit of the game with a two out single through the ride side in the bottom of the first, but the RedHawks were able to get out of the inning before the Falcons could score.
Neither team was able to get anything going at the plate in the second inning with the game remaining scoreless, 0-0.
In the top of the third inning after Wiemer retired the first batter of the inning on three straight strikes, three Falcon errors led to the only run of the game, giving Miami a 1-0 lead over BG. The Falcons were able to get the next two batters but Miami's one unearned run ended up being enough.
The Falcon bats answered right back in the bottom of the third as Melissa West got the offense going with a two out single to the left side of the infield. Karmen Coffey kept things rolling for the Falcons with a seeing-eye single into center field putting runners on first and third for BG after aggressive base running from West. Wiemer then stepped up to the plate, but the RedHawks took no chances as they gave her first base on four straight balls to load the bases. Miami was able to keep the Falcons scoreless getting the third out of the inning.
The RedHawks recorded their first hit of the game with a led-off single in the top of the fourth inning but the Falcons were able to get three outs before Miami could score.
The Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the bottom of the fourth as the game remained 1-0 in favor of Miami.
Wiemer and the Falcon defense once again were able to make a quick inning of the RedHawks retiring the first three batters.
In the bottom of the fifth West sparked the Falcon offense once again with a two out double to left center but the Falcons were kept scoreless as the RedHawks ended the inning.
In the top of the sixth the Falcons recorded their fourth three-up, three-down inning.
The Falcon offense came right back as Wiemer led-off the bottom of the fourth for BG with a singe through the right side. Lindsay Arney then came in to pinch run for Wiemer. Miami was able to get the first out of the inning but a passed ball allowed Arney to advance to second and move into scoring position. Then with two outs Arney took advantage of failed Miami pick off attempt and moved to third base, but the Falcons weren't able to score before Miami got the third out of the inning.
Heading into the seventh inning the score was still, 1-0 with Miami in the lead. The Falcons were able to keep the RedHawks scoreless in the seventh to keep it a one run ball game.
In the bottom of the seventh the Falcon offense wasn't able to get anything going and ended up falling, 1-0.
Despite the loss the Falcon offense out hit the RedHawks, 5-2 with two players recording multiple hit games. Leading the Orange and Brown bats were Wiemer and West each notching two hits. Wiemer went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with one walk, while West went 2-for-3 with a double, her fourth of the season and 10th extra base hit. Also recording a hit on the day was Coffey.
From the circle Wiemer fanned six batters in seven innings of work, only giving up two hits with no earned runs.
The Falcons will return to action as they host Miami in game two of the weekend series tomorrow (April 12) afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Meserve Softball Field.
