BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to Miami, 7-1 this afternoon (April 12) in game two of their weekend series. Falcons are now 7-22 overall and 2-8 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Miami offense started the game off with a single to the left side of the infield, but the Falcon defense was able to get the next three batters to end the inning.
The Falcon offense answered right back as Melissa West led-off the Orange and Brown with a double to left center. Karmen Coffey was then able to move West to third base as she kept the ball on the right side of the field. For the second straight game Miami stayed away from Hayley Wiemer as they gave her first base on four straight balls, but the RedHawks were able to end the inning and keep the Falcons scoreless.
Miami recorded a one out single to the left side of the infield in the top of the second but the Falcons were able to get the next two outs to end the inning.
The Falcon bats were kept under wrap in the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the third the RedHawks ended the scoreless game as they were able to put together a two out rally to score two runs on three hits and one Falcon error, taking a 2-0 lead.
Haleigh Bielstein led-off the bottom of the third for the Falcons with a single to the left side of the infield. BG was eventually able to put runners on first and second but weren't able to score before Miami ended the inning.
Despite a lead-off single thought the left side the Falcons held the RedHawks in top of the fourth inning.
Missy Bowman gave the Falcons a base runner in the bottom of the fourth as she earned a two out walk but once again BG was kept scoreless.
The Falcons were able to make a quick inning of the RedHawks in the top of the fifth with a one, two, three inning.
The Orange and Brown had their second scoring opportunity of the game as they put together a two out rally in the bottom of the fifth. West got the Falcons going as she earned a two out walk. Coffey then hit a shallow single to center field to put runners on first and second for the Falcons, bringing Wiemer to the plate. For the third time this weekend the RedHawks didn't want to take any chances with Wiemer as they gave her first base on a base on balls to load the bases. Miami ended the inning before the Falcons could score.
A rough sixth inning for the Falcons allowed the RedHawks to break open the game as they scored five runs off of three hits and four BG errors to take a 7-0 lead.
Junior Susan Sontag led-off for the Falcons inning the bottom of six scoring BG's only run of the game as she crushed a long ball over the left center field fence, her second homer of the season and 11th career home run. Sontag's homer moved her into the top 10 career home run list, tied for 10th with former Falcon Colleen Bates. Melissa Bott kept the Falcons going as she then reached on a Miami error but the RedHawks got the last two outs of the inning before the Falcons could score again.
The RedHawks opened the seventh inning with a double to right center but the Falcons got the next three batters to end the inning.
The Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the bottom of the seventh inning falling to the RedHawks, 7-1.
The Falcons will return to action as they take a break from MAC play in a Tuesday (April 14) tilt against Big Ten opponent Michigan at 4:00 p.m. in East Lansing, Michigan. The Orange and Brown will then return home to host Akron in Friday (April 17) afternoon double-header at 1:00 p.m. and Ohio for a two game weekend series on Saturday (April 18) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 19) at 1:00 p.m.
