Falcons Split Double-Header with Zips

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team split their Friday (April 17) afternoon double-header against Akron, 3-1 and 0-8. The Falcons are now 8-23 overall and 3-9 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Orange and Brown will return to action as they host MAC East opponent Ohio in a two game weekend series, Saturday (April 18) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 19) at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons ended their eight game losing streak as they topped the Zips in game one, 3-1, this afternoon (April 17). Falcon homers by Susan Sontag and Katelynn Boso lifted the Orange and Brown past Akron.
Senior Hayley Wiemer picked up her sixth win of the season now 6-17 overall and 3-6 in the MAC in the circle for the Falcons.
The Zips opened game one of the double-header with a single to short stop. Akron moved into scoring position as they stole second base and laid down a sacrifice bunt to put a runner on third with one out, but Wiemer and the Falcon defense kept the Zips scoreless as the next two batters grounded out to end the inning.
The Falcons were able to get any offense going in the bottom of the first inning but then answered back defensively as they made a quick inning of the Zips with a one, two, three inning in the second.
The Falcons struck first in the bottom of the second as Sontag blasted a long ball out of the park in right field to put BG on the scoreboard first, 1-0. Sontag recorded her third homer of the season and 12th career home run, now tied with former teammate Ashley Zirkle for ninth overall in the BG career record books.
In the top of the third inning the Zips got their second base runner of the game as they reached on a Falcon error but Wiemer was able to fan the next batter on strikes to end the third inning before Akron could score.
After holding the Zips the Falcons started the bottom of the third inning right where they left off in the second as Boso led-off for the Orange and Brown with a homer over the left field wall to give BG a 2-0 lead. The home marked the first for Boso this season and eventually was the winning run for the Falcons. Then with one out Melissa West reached on an Akron error and made it all the way to second. Karmen Coffey was able to keep the ball in play on the right side of the field to move West to third base. With two outs Wiemer then doubled off of the top of the right center field wall, just shy of a homer to drive home West and make it a 3-0 ball game.
Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to get the Zips three-up, three-down in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.
Sontag recorded the Falcons final hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a lead-off single up the middle but BG wasn't able to score in the fourth or fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth the Falcons were able to get the first two batters but the Zips rallied with three hits along with a Falcon error to score their only run of the game, 3-1.
The Falcons couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the six, but only needed three outs in the top of the seventh to end the game. The Falcons got the first batter of the inning. The next Akron batter singled up the middle but then tried to turn it into a double as Falcon center fielder Lindsay Arney gunned her down at second base to get the second out of the inning. Akron was able to record another single up the middle and eventually steal second but Wiemer fanned the next batter on strikes to end the game, 3-1 in favor of the Falcons.
Leading the Falcon bats was Sontag going 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run scored. Also recording hits in game one were Boso going 1-for-2 with a home run, one RBI and one run scored, while Wiemer went 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
The BGSU softball team fell to Akron in game two of the double-header 8-0 in five innings.
Akron was able to score early as they recorded five runs in the top of the first inning off of three hits and a Falcon error.
Karmen Coffey got the Falcon offense going in the bottom of the first with a one out single through the left side of the infield but the Falcons weren't able to score.
Both teams were kept scoreless with one, two, three innings in the second, third and fourth.
Akron was able to extend their lead in the top of the fourth as they recorded three more runs off of four hits and a Falcon error to take an 8-0 lead over BG.
The Falcons couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the fourth but were able to get the Zips three-up, three down in the top of the fifth.
Missy Bowman got the Falcon offense started in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single down the right field line but the Falcons' were able to score, falling to the Zips 8-0.
Leading the Falcon offense in game two were Coffey and Bowman each going 1-for-2.
Melissa Bott picked up the loss for BG in the circle falling to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
