BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team took one of two games in this afternoon's (April 18) double-header against Ohio. The Falcons defeated the Bobcats 6-4 in game one, out hitting Ohio 13-10, matching their season high. The Orange and Brown fell 2-0 in game two as the BG offense couldn't quite find their groove.
The Falcons will return to action as they take a break from MAC play to match-up against Big Ten opponent Michigan State on Tuesday (April 21) at 4:00 p.m., rescheduled from the rain out on April 14. The Falcons will then return to Meserve Softball Field to host a six game home stand, their last of the season. The Falcons will take on Buffalo in a Friday (April 24) double-header at 1:00 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then wrap up their MAC home schedule in a two game weekend series against East division rival Kent State on Saturday (April 25) at 2:00 p.m. and Senior Day Sunday (April 26) at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcon offense brought out their big sticks in game one of today's double-header as they defeated the Bobcats, 6-4 and out hit Ohio 13-10, recording no less than one hit in every inning. The Falcons' 13 hits matches their season high against Northern Illinois (April 4) and marks their seventh game of double-digits offensively.
Senior Hayley started the game for the Falcons in the circle. Wiemer and the Falcon defense made a quick inning of the Bobcats in the first as it was a one, two, three inning.
The Falcon offense got started right from the beginning as freshman Melissa West led-off the Orange and Brown with a single up the middle. Then with two outs sophomore Zada Lines kept the Falcons alive with a line drive single to left field putting runners on first and second for the Falcons. Junior Susan Sontag put the Falcons on the scoreboard first as she hit a long fly ball to the right center field warning track driving home two BG runs, 2-0 and recording her fourth double of the season.
Ohio got their first base runner in the top of the second inning as their lead-off batter singled to third base; however Falcon catcher Katelynn Boso gunned her down on the base path as Ohio tried to steal second. The Falcons were able to get the second out of the inning but then Ohio recorded back-to-back hits to score one run, 2-1.
The Falcon bats answered right back as sophomore Melissa Bott led-off with a single up the middle for BG. Boso then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bott into scoring position at second base. The Bobcats were able to get the second out of the inning, but West stepped up to the plate and kept the Falcons alive with a two out double to left center field to score Bott and give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the third Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to get the first two outs of the inning but Ohio put together back-to-back hits to score a run, making it a 3-2 ball game.
The Falcons weren't able to score in the bottom of the third but Sontag kept the BG offense rolling recording a one out single. The Orange and Brown were able to keep the Bobcats from scoring in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings only giving up one hit in each inning.
The Falcons struck again in the bottom of the fourth as put together a two out rally. West got the Falcons started earning a two out walk. Karmen Coffey then singled through the right side of the infield. A Bobcat throwing error allowed West and Coffey to advance a base putting runners on second and third for BG. Wiemer then drove home West and Coffey with a single up the middle to give BG a 5-2 lead over Ohio. Lines followed up with another single up the middle for BG, putting runners on first and third but the Falcons weren't able to score again before the inning was over.
The Falcons scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to give them a 6-2 cushion. Missy Bowman led-off for the Falcons earning a walk. Carly Riepenhoff then pitch hit for the Falcons and kept the offense going with a slap single to the left side of the infield. Then with one out, Haleigh Bielstein drive Bowman home with a single to left field, to give BG a 6-2 lead.
The Falcon offense kept rolling as they recorded two more hits in the bottom of the sixth, even though they weren't able score.
Ohio didn't give up as they scored two runs in the top of the seventh off of two hits and a Falcon error, making it a 6-4 game. Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to end the inning and game before the Bobcats could score again, picking up a 6-4 win in game one.
The Falcon offense was on fire as they matched their season high 13 hits, as eight different players recorded at least one hit with five recording multiple hit games. Leading the Falcon bats were West and Coffey each going 2-for-3. West's two hits included a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Also recording two hits for BG were Wiemer, Lines and Sontag each going 2-for-4. Wiemer and Sontag also recorded two RBIs a piece.
Wiemer picked up the win in the circle for the Falcons moving to 7-17 overall and 4-6 in the MAC.
Game two was another close battle between the Falcons and the Bobcats, but Ohio end up on top defeating BG 2-0.
The first four innings of the game two was scoreless with only five hits between the two teams.
The Falcons got their offense rolling in the bottom of the third as Katelynn Boso led-off for the Orange and Brown with a single. Then with two outs Karmen Coffey kept the offense going with a single through the right side but the Falcons weren't able to score.
Ohio broke open the scoreless game in the top of the fifth as they scored two runs off of two hits to take a 2-0 lead.
BG wasn't able to get anything going in the bottom of the fifth remaining scoreless.
The Bobcats were able to recorded one hit in the sixth and seventh innings but the Falcons were able to keep them from scoring again.
BG's final hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Zada Lines recorded a two out single to the right side of the infield but the Falcons couldn't score before the inning was over.
The Falcons dropped game two of the double-header 2-0 to the Bobcats.
Leading the Falcon offense in game two were Coffey, Lines, and Boso each recording one hit.
