Falcons Fall to Spartans

EAST LANSING, Michigan - After numerous rain and lightening delays the Bowling Green State University softball team finally squared off against Michigan State this evening (April 21) at Old College Field as the Falcons fell to the Spartans, 8-0 in five innings.
The Falcons recorded three hits on the day while the Spartans totaled eight.
Karmen Coffey got the Falcon offense started in the first inning with a one-out line drive double to right field, but BG wasn't able to score before the Spartans ending the inning.
The two other Orange and Brown hits came in the top of the fifth inning as Susan Sontag led-off the inning with a single to first base. Then with one out Melissa Bott singled up the middle to put runners on first and second for BG but the Spartans were able end the inning, with the Falcons remaining scoreless.
The Spartans were able put runs on the scoreboard in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Michigan State got their offense going in the first inning scoring two runs off of two hits, 2-0.
In the bottom of the second inning the Spartans recorded a two out double but the Falcon defense ended the inning before Michigan State could score.
In the bottom of the third the Spartans extended their lead, 4-0 scoring two more runs off of two Falcon errors.
The Spartans scored again in the bottom of the third off one hit and a Falcon error to make it a 5-0 game.
Michigan State scored their final runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Spartans recorded three straight hits which led to three runs as the Falcons fell, 8-0.
Leading the Falcon offense were Coffey, Bott and Sontag each going 1-for-2 against the Spartans. Coffey recorded her second double of the season, extending her hitting streak to four games.
The Falcons will return to action at the Meserve Softball Field to host a six game home stand, their last of the season. The Falcons will take on Buffalo in a Friday (April 24) double-header at 1:00 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then wrap up their MAC home schedule in a two game weekend series against East division rival Kent State on Saturday (April 25) at 2:00 p.m. and Senior Day Sunday (April 26) at 1:00 p.m.
