BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a doubleheader to the Wright State Raiders this evening (April 29) to close out the first home season at the Meserve Softball Field. The Falcons fell 14-3 in game one and 8-3 in game two to the Raiders.
The Falcons look to bounce back as they continue their hunt for a 2009 Mid-American Conference Tournament berth as they take on Central Michigan in a Friday doubleheader (May 1) at 1:00 p.m. and Eastern Michigan in a two game weekend series on Saturday (May 2) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (May 3) at 1:00 p.m.
In game one of the doubleheader the Falcons fell to the Raiders 14-3 in five innings as Wright State was able to score in every inning but the third.
Melissa Bott recorded her sixth start in the circle for the Falcons.
The Raiders were able to score first with two runs in the top of the first on two hits and a Falcon error and then came back to score one run in the second off of two hits and a Falcon error taking a 3-0 lead.
Despite a rough game on defense the Falcons were able to get their bats going on several occasions. In the bottom of the first inning the Falcons recorded back-to-back hits with two outs as Hayley Wiemer got the Orange and Brown started with a two out double down the left field line. Zada Lines kept BG going, following up with a single through the left side of the infield, but the Falcons weren't able to push across any runs in the first inning.
The Falcon offense struck again in the bottom of the third inning as BG was able to record their first run of the game. With two outs Karmen Coffey was given first base after being hit by a pitch. Wiemer then stepped up to the plate and crushed a double to left center, her second in as many at-bats, driving home Coffey and putting the Falcons on the scoreboard, 3-1.
While Bott and the Falcon defense were able to keep the Raiders scoreless in the third, Wright State had a huge fourth inning scoring 10 runs on seven hits and two Falcon errors. The Raiders scored their finally run in the fifth on two hits and a Falcon error.
Despite being down 14-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning the Falcon bats didn't give up. Katelynn Boso led-off the inning for the Falcons with a home run over the left center field wall to make it a 14-2 ball game. Then with one out Melissa West hit a hard ground ball in the hole between third and short-stop to keep the Falcons rolling. With two outs and a runner on second Wiemer blasted her third double of the game this time to right field to drive home West making it 14-3. The Falcons weren't able to score again before the Raiders could get the final out of the inning to end the game as BG fell 14-3 to Wright State in game one.
Leading the Falcon offense in game one was Wiemer going a perfect 3-for-3, including three doubles and two RBIs. Wiemer's three doubles now gives her nine on the season and 32 in her career, now ninth in the BG record books for doubles. Recording the Falcons' other extra base hit was Boso going 1-for-2 with a one run homer, her second of the season.
In game two of the doubleheader between the Falcons and the Raiders Zada Lines earned her fourth start in the circle for BG.
Once again the Raiders scored early as they scored one run in the top of the first inning off of two hits.
The Falcons were also able to get their offense started early as they recorded two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Karmen Coffey got the Falcons going with a one out double to right center, bringing Hayley Wiemer to the plate. After going a perfect 3-for-3 in game one the Raiders were extremely cautious with her at the plate. As the Raiders attempted to intentionally walk Wiemer the first pitch got away from Wright State's pitcher allowing Coffey to advance to third. Wiemer was then given first on an intentional base-on-balls. Zada Lines kept the Falcons going as she laid down a bunt for a single to load the bases. The Falcons weren't able to score before the Raiders were able to end the inning with the score remaining, 1-0 in favor of Wright State.
In the top of the second the Raiders were able to extend their lead as they scored four runs off of three hits and two Falcon errors to take a 5-0 lead.
The Raiders scored another run in the top of the fourth inning off of homer to take a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Falcons were able to get their offense going once again as Melissa West led-off the inning with a double to the left center. Then with one out once again the Raiders intentionally walked Wiemer putting runners on first and second for the Falcons. West then stole third moving her into scoring position. With two outs a Wright State wild pitch allowed West to score making it a 6-1 game and Wiemer to advance to second. Susan Sontag was then given first base on a base-on-balls once again putting runners on first and second for BG. Missy Bowman drove home both Wiemer and Sontag with a double to the center field warning track cutting the Raiders' lead to three, 6-3.
In the bottom of the seventh the Falcons weren't able to score falling to the Raiders 8-3 in game two.
Leading the Falcon offense in game two was Bowman going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Also recording extra base hits for the Falcons were Coffey going 1-for-3 with a double and West going 1-for-4 with a double. Lines recorded the Falcons other hit against Wright State in game two.
