BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - For four years at Bowling Green State University, Lindsey Goldsberry has been the epitome of a team player. On Friday night, however, she was the star of the show.
Goldsberry picked up multiple awards at the BGSU Women's Basketball Awards Banquet, which was held at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union on the BGSU campus. The team handed out various end-of-season awards, and also recognized Goldsberry and manager Randall Clark, the two seniors in the program.
Sophomore Lauren Prochaska was named the team's Player of the Year, in a vote of team members. Junior Tara Breske was named the team's Power Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while soph Tracy Pontius was named the Playmaker of the Year. Freshman Jessica Slagle picked up the team's Most Improved Player award, while junior Laura Bugher was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Goldsberry, however, picked up no fewer than three awards on the evening. She was named the Impact Player of the Year, and also earned the Fran & Marty Voll Senior Achievement Award. And, Goldsberry and Clark were co-winners of the Falcon Award, given to the person or persons who embody qualities such as dedication, commitment, effort and being the ultimate team player. Goldsberry also had earned the Falcon Award in her junior season.
After the welcome by Master of Ceremonies Larry Weiss and the invocation by freshman Maribeth Giese, the crowd of several hundred banquet-goers was treated to dinner and a spectacular season video, with the latter coming courtesy of Julie Baker of BGSU Instructional Media.
The two seniors, both of whom hail from Dayton (Chaminade-Julienne H.S.) had the opportunity to share their thoughts and memories on their four years at BGSU. Additionally, the Falcon first-year letterwinners were presented with their jackets, Sheri Quiroga was honored as the program's Booster of the Year and Miller spilled the beans several days early on another award for the program.
Miller also recapped the 2008-09 season and looked ahead to the 2009-10 campaign. And, the head coach announced that Breske, Sarah Clapper and Maggie Hennegan will be the team's captains for '09-10. The trio earned that distinction in a vote of their teammates. The award is particularly impressive in Hennegan's case, as not only will she be a captain as a junior, she also was voted as a captain before ever playing her first game as a Falcon. The Cincinnati native sat out the just-completed season after transferring from Saint Louis University.
The 2008-09 Falcons, of course, won the Mid-American Conference regular-season championship for the fifth consecutive season, posting the second-highest win total in school and conference history. BGSU went 29-5 overall and 15-1 in the MAC, advancing to national postseason play for a fifth-straight year.
Goldsberry finished her career as the winningest player in MAC basketball history, while Clark is the winningest manager of all time. The Falcons went 114-20 during their four years, for the highest win total in a four-year span in league history.
