BGSU heads to Michigan State Sunday
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team will open the home portion of the season this weekend, before taking to the road to face a second Big Ten Conference opponent in as many weekends ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will host Indiana State University in Friday (Aug. 28) action ... kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field ... then, the Falcons will head north to face Michigan State University on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) ... kickoff for that match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at MSU's DeMartin Stadium.

THE FALCONS ARE ...
• 112-119-23 all-time, one match into the 13th season in program history;
• 46-33-9 overall in the last four-plus seasons;
• 59-59-13 in Mid-American Conference regular-season matches;
• 39-21-8 vs. MAC schools over the last five seasons (including regular-season and tournament matches), and 31-16-6 vs. league foes in the last four years;
• 57-51-9 at home, and 27-12-3 at Cochrane Field in the last four seasons;
• 8-1-1 at Cochrane last year, with the only loss coming to a team (Michigan State) that spent time in the national rankings;
• 47-59-12 in road contests in program history;
• 8-9-2 all-time in neutral-site matches;

• 0-1-0 in games played on Aug. 28 (a 4-0 home loss to Wright State in 2005);

FAMILIAR FACE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE
Falcon head coach Andy Richards will see a familar face when he glances at the other bench on Friday ... Indiana State head coach Erika (Flanders) True is a BGSU graduate, and was one of the top goalkeepers in Falcon history ... she earned four letters from 1999-2002, playing the last three years under Richards ... she still holds the school career GK records for wins, matches played, matches started, minutes played and saves ... True shares the BGSU record for complete-match shutouts with current Falcon 'keeper Alexa Arsenault.
YOU LOOK FAMILIAR, TOO – YOU I'VE NEVER MET
BGSU's two matches this weekend include a first-time non-conference opponent (Indiana State), and the non-league opponent the Falcons have met more than any other (Michigan State).
LAST TIME OUT
Host Ohio State scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 win over the Falcons Friday night (Aug. 21) ... the Buckeyes held a commanding 27-3 margin in shot attempts on the night ... redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault, the All-MAC First-Team goalkeeper in 2008, made eight saves – several of the spectacular variety – on the night ... Paige Maxwell and Kayla Eckman scored OSU's goals.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season at the Falcon helm, is one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... Richards has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 93-85-19 ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no MAC coach has as many trips to the league tourney's title game as Richards ... the 2007 season marked the fifth time he had guided a BG squad to the championship match ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... BGSU reached an agreement with Richards on a two-year contract extension, in May of 2008 ... his contract now runs through June 30, 2011 ... Richards had inked a three-year contract in February of 2006, marking the first time in school history that a soccer coach had received a multi-year contract.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
Head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season at the helm, welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club that finished 12-6-4 overall and 6-3-2 in MAC action ... the '08 team's overall winning percentage of .636 was the second best in school history, and last year's team set a school record for fewest losses in a season.
OFFENSE? CHECK
The Falcons scored a total of 38 goals last year, the third-highest total in school history ... the BGSU record for goals in a season is 42, set by the 1998 team ... the returning players combined to score a total of 21 of last year's 38 goals ... sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro is the Falcons' top returning goalscorer, with five ... classmate Megan Amann is the leading returnee in terms of points ... she had 12 points to Zuccaro's 11 last fall.
DEFENSE? CHECK
The BGSU defense, not to be outdone by the offense, shattered the school record for fewest goals allowed last year ... the Falcons allowed just 14 goals in last year's 22 games, an average of only 0.68 gpg surrendered ... the old school-record low was 1.30 gpg allowed, by both the 2005 and 2006 BG teams.
DEFENSE PART II
The Falcons allowed only seven goals in the 11 MAC matches, an average of 0.64 gpg allowed ... that shattered the old school records of 10 goals allowed and a 0.91 gpg, set in 2006 ... BGSU had seven shutouts in the 11 conference contests.
DEFENSE PART III
Goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault and defender Colleen Kordan give the Falcons a pair of returning All-MAC First-Team selections ... Arsenault posted 11 complete-game shutouts last year, and the BGSU back line combined for 14 total clean sheets, also a school record ... Arsenault, after just two seasons, has tied the BGSU career record for shutouts, with 17.
LOOKING TO EXTEND SOME IMPRESSIVE STREAKS
BGSU is looking to extend several streaks in 2009 ... last year, the Falcons finished with a winning record in MAC play for the fifth time in the 12-year history of the program .. after going 9-2-0 in league action in 2005, 7-4-0 in 2006, 6-5-0 in '07 and 6-3-2 last fall, the Falcons have posted four-straight winning MAC records for the first time ever ... BG's only other winning conference mark had come in 2002 (7-4-1) ... the '08 Falcons finished among the top-four teams in the MAC standings for only the fifth time (fourth in 2002, first in 2005, T-third in 2006, fourth in both '07 and '08) in school history, and the fourth-straight year ... overall, the Falcons have now posted five consecutive seasons of double-digit wins for the first time in school annals ... BG has had four-straight records of at least .500 for the first time ever.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Indiana State is 0-1-0 on the young season ... the Sycamores lost a 1-0, double-OT decision at Southeast Missouri Friday (Aug. 21) ... last season, ISU went 5-15-0 overall and 1-5-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play ... first-year coach Erica True inherited 19 letterwinners, including seven starters, from that club.
The Falcons and Indiana State have never met in women's soccer.
Michigan State takes a 1-0-0 record into Sunday's BGSU match ... the Spartans opened the season with a 3-0 home win over Oakland Wednesday (Aug. 26) ... sophomore Laura Heyboer, who had 21 goals last year en route to being named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year and the SoccerBuzz.com National Freshman of the Year, scored one of MSU's goals vs. OU ... she is one of 21 returning letterwinners, including 10 starters, for 19th-year head coach Tom Saxton ... last year, the Spartans went 14-7-3 overall and 5-4-1 in Big Ten play.
The Falcons trail Michigan State, 10-1-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... MSU is BGSU's most common non-conference opponent, with a regular-season meeting in each of thhe Falcons' first 12 years as a program, plus a matchup in the 2005 NCAA Championships ... last year, the Spartans picked up a 3-0 win in Bowling Green ... BGSU is 0-3-2 all-time in matches in East Lansing ... the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the Falcons' last trip to MSU, two years ago (Sept. 21, 2007) ... Alexa Arsenault made six saves in that match, her first collegiate start.
FALCONS PICKED THIRD
The Falcons have been picked to finish third in the MAC in 2009, according to the preseason coaches poll released Aug. 20 ... Toledo was the coaches' choice to win the '09 MAC regular-season and tournament titles.
