With the win, the Falcons improve to 13-4 overall and remain unbeaten in the MAC at 3-0. The Bulls drop to 4-12 and 0-3, respectively.
Junior Tracy Pontius had 16 points to pace four Falcons in double digits. UB's Kourtney Brown led all players with 20 points and 13 rebounds on the night.
The Falcons had success pounding the ball inside, as BG had a whopping 46 points in the paint. Junior forward Jen Uhl scored 13 points to tie her season high, while senior post Tara Breske and junior wing Lauren Prochaska had 12 apiece.
The game featured three ties and two lead changes, all in the first half, and UB led for much of that half. But, with the Bulls holding a 27-23 lead with five minutes left in the period, the Falcons proceeded to go on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.
That run began when sophomore Jessica Slagle made a shot fake, took two dribbles and hit a right-side jumper that barely moved the net, getting the Falcons within two points. But, the home team was just getting started.
BGSU ran with (and past) the Bulls, scoring the remaining nine points of that run in only 47 seconds. After a BG miss, Breske grabbed an offensive rebound in traffic and put her follow-up shot off the glass and in, tying the game with 2:41 on the clock.
Pontius picked the pocket of UB's Abby Dowd at midcourt and went in ahead of the pack for an uncontested layup with 2:24 left in the half. Buffalo threw the inbounds pass away, with the ball caroming off the BGSU banner in front of the BCSN television talent. The Falcons had the ball back, and UB burned a timeout with 2:14 on the clock.
Out of that timeout, a Pontius inbounds pass found Uhl under the UB hoop, and the junior laid the ball up and in for a 31-27 lead. Pontius stole the ball from Dowd yet again, poking the ball away from behind as the Bulls' freshman tried to drive down the lane. Pontius took off downcourt, received a pass from Slagle and buried a three-pointer from the left elbow, giving the Brown and Orange a 34-27 advantage and prompting another UB timeout with 1:54 remaining.
The teams traded free throws before halftime, with BG maintaining that seven-point advantage heading into the lockerroom. A Uhl putback with just over three minutes gone in the second half put the Falcons' lead into double digits for the remainder of the evening, and that lead grew as high as 21 points on several occasions.
Breske had a pair of three-point plays in the opening half, including an 'and-one' layup off a Pontius pass just seven seconds in. But, the Bulls came back to take the lead, 6-5, after back-to-back layups from Brown. UB had 30 points in the paint in the game, and both teams scored their first three baskets of the night down low.
UT took a 9-7 lead on a Jessica Fortman jumper just prior to the game's first media timeout, and Brittany Hedderson's putback gave UB a four-point lead with 13:47 on the clock. But, the Falcons battled back, as Breske scored inside and freshman Allison Papenfuss tracked down a long defensive rebound and hit a jumper in transition.
The duo of Breske and Papenfuss did the bulk of BG's scoring in the early going. Breske had 10 of her 12 points in the first half, while Papenfuss scored six consecutive Falcon points midway through the first half.
After the aforementioned jumper by Papenfuss, UB's Chrissy Cooper answered with a three-pointer at the other end. But, Papenfuss pulled down an offensive rebound and went back up for a layup, cutting UB's lead to 14-13.
The Bulls hit a pair of jumpers in back-to-back possession, but Papenfuss converted another layup at the 9:11 mark. In addition to those six points, Papenfuss had six rebounds in a seven minutes of action in the opening half.
The visitors got the lead as high as five points, as Hedderson's layup made it a 25-20 game with 5:24 left in the half. Pontius found Breske for her second 'and-one' layup of the half, but Brown answered with a jumper at the 5:03 mark. But, the Falcons then scored 11-straight points, including the nine-point blitz in just 47 seconds.
The Falcons held a 41-36 advantage on the boards, with 21 of those BG rebounds coming at the offensive end. Breske and Papenfuss each had eight total rebounds on the night, combining for nine on offense.
Uhl made six of her eight shot attempts from the field, and had six rebounds, including four at the offensive end.
Fortman joined Brown in double digits in the scoring column for UB, with 13 points, and she added six rebounds.
Freshmen Papenfuss and Jessie Tamerlano each had six points off the bench for BG, with Tamerlano adding four rebounds and two steals in nine minutes of work. The Falcons had a total of nine steals in the game, led by Pontius with three.
Pontius and Prochaska had three assists apiece, as BG had eight players with at least one helper. The Falcons had two more assists (15) than turnovers (13) on the night. The Brown and Orange forced UB into 19 turnovers, and BG had a 25-14 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Falcons now prepare for a Saturday (Jan. 16) game at Kent State University. Tipoff is 2:00 p.m at KSU's M.A.C. Center. Then, BGSU returns home for three consecutive games, beginning with a Tuesday (Jan. 19) contest against Miami University.
