The Bowling Green State University tennis team begins the 'home' portion of the 'spring' schedule this weekend, hosting a pair of dual matches at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Saturday's IPFW match will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the YSU dual slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
The Falcons have played the first four dual matches away from home, posting a 3-1 record. BGSU dropped the dual-match opener at Louisville, but the Falcons have reeled off three-straight victories, over Morehead State, Cincinnati and Xavier.
Individually, junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston each have overall records of 6-2 in the spring. Chiricosta has a 3-1 record at the top singles flight in dual-match play, while Eccleston also is 3-1 at the fourth flight. The Chiricosta/Eccleston doubles team has won three-of-four spring matches at the number-one flight.
Freshman Katie Grubb has posted a 2-1 record at the sixth singles flight, while seniors Katia Babina (flight #2) and Samantha Kintzel (flight #3) each are 2-2 in duals. The doubles team of Babina and freshman Jade Johnson is 3-1 at the number-two flight, while Kintzel and soph Jessica Easdale have split their four spring matches at the third doubles flight.
Easdale, who missed nearly all of her freshman season due to injury, made her dual-match singles debut in the Xavier match (Jan. 24) and picked up the decisive singles win in a 4-3 BG victory.
Overall, Chiricosta leads the Falcons with a 10-3 singles record this year, while Grubb and Eccleston have gone 9-4 and 9-5, respectively. Four Falcons have won eight singles matches this season, including Easdale, who has an 8-2 record.
Chiricosta has a total of 18 combined wins this season to date, followed closely by Eccleston (17), Johnson (17), Babina (16) and Easdale (16).
IPFW enters the weekend with a 1-1 dual-match record, and the Mastodons are scheduled to play a Friday night (Jan. 29) match at Evansville before making the trip to Northwest Ohio for Saturday's match. The 'Dons lost to Toledo to open dual-match play, before posting a victory over Eastern Illinois.
IPFW was picked to win the Summit League title in 2010, according to the league's preseason coaches poll. The Mastodons received five of the nine first-place votes. IPFW returns five key players from last year's squad that won the Summit League's regular-season title and posted a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. The 'Dons posted an impressive 24-4 overall record last year, including a perfect 8-0 mark in Summit League regular-season play. Two-time SL Player of the Year Amy Recht headlines the returnees.
Youngstown State will bring a dual-match record of 0-1 to the PTC on Sunday. The Penguins dropped a 6-1 decision at West Virginia in last Saturday's (Jan. 23) spring opener. Last season, YSU finished third in the Horizon League.
The Falcons have never met IPFW in dual-match play. The Mastodons did compete at the BGSU Invitational at Keefe Courts back in September.
BGSU holds an 11-0 lead over Youngstown State in the all-time series between the teams. Last year, the Falcons picked up a 5-2 win against the Penguins on the road (Jan. 17, 2009).
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will have a break of nearly two weeks from intercollegiate competition before returning to the PTC for a match vs. Detroit on Friday, Feb. 12.
