Falcons Face Three Schools in Ten Events
The Bowling Green State University swimming team faces its first outside competition of the 2010-11 season on Friday, Oct. 15th when they host the 2010 Tom Stubbs Relays at BGSU's Cooper Pool.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m., the Falcons will host the Akron Zips, Oakland Golden Grizzlies and Youngstown State Penguins in a meet that is constituted of ten different relays.
Among the relays to be held are a 4x100 individual medley, 200m medley and 200m freestyle, as well as 300m medley, butterfly and backstroke events.
The Falcons have built a recent history of success in this event.
In last year's Tom Stubbs Relays, the Falcons won four of the 11 relays against the same three schools. They placed second in four other events and placed third in three more.
In 2008, the team won five of the nine races and finished in the top three of the other four relays.
The 2010 team is entering a new era. Head Coach Petra Martin takes the helm of the team as BGSU's first new coach in eight years. The team also must adjust to life without Meg Richardson, who finished her career with the Falcons as the owner of three individual records and as part of five different school relay records.
However, the team certainly returns talent to the 2010-11 squad, as three members of the current team own individual school records and several have taken part in setting several relay team records over the last two seasons.
The Tom Stubbs Relays are named after Falcon Hall of Famer Tom Stubbs. Stubbs coached the BGSU men's swimming team from 1963-1981 and the women's swimming team from 1977-1981. In his four years as coach of the women's team, Stubbs led the school to a 29-5 record, three state championships and a Mid-American Conference championship. He was inducted into BGSU's Hall of Fame in 2007.
