With the victory, the Huskies are now 8-6-2 overall, and Northern improves to 2-4-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 5-8-2 and 2-3-0, respectively.
Hoyos netted the lone goal of the match with just 4:23 remaining in the second half, scoring far post after a cross from Gael Rivera.
"Northern Illinois is a very good team," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "They have had some inconsistent results this year, but they have a system that is very difficult to play against, so we knew we would have our hands full.
"They are very dangerous on set pieces and long throw-ins, and we were under a lot of pressure, but we defended pretty well for most of the match. FInally, though, they were able to break us down and get a goal in the last few minutes.
"We will return home and get ready for next week's matches. We know that we need to get a result next weekend at Florida Atlantic."
The Huskies were credited with 18 shot attempts to BGSU's eight, but the Falcons had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey made four saves en route to the shutout, while BG junior 'keeper Miguel Rosales had two stops.
BGSU will play a pair of road games in the final week of the regular season. The Falcons will face IUPUI in non-conference action Wednesday night (Nov. 3) in Indianapolis, then will jet to Boca Raton for a Saturday (Nov. 6) contest vs. Florida Atlantic, a MAC affiliate for men's soccer. A BGSU win at FAU would clinch a top-four finish and a berth in the conference tournament for the Falcons.
