With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-1 on the season, and BGSU has won 12 games in a row. The Bulldogs drop to 6-6.
BGSU set a school record for non-conference wins in a season. The Falcons have posted a double-digit win total in non-league play in each of the last five years.
"We're very excited about the win," said Falcon head coach Curt Miller. "This is a very good Butler team with a lot of experience and a lot of weapons. They are 16-2 over their last 18 games at home, so this is a really tough place to get a win.
"I thought our defense was outstanding in the first half, limiting 3's and keeping them off the foul line. In the second half, they made a late run at us, but we maintained our composure and found a way to win."
Senior Lauren Prochaska had a game-high 28 points to pace four double-figure scorers for the Brown and Orange. Sophomore Chrissy Steffen, a native of nearby Carmel, Ind., had 13 points and a career-high eight rebounds.
Seniors Tracy Pontius and Jen Uhl had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Uhl pulled down eight rebounds to tie Steffen for game honors.
Chloe Hamilton had 17 points to lead four Bulldogs in twin figures. Brittany Bowen and Alyssa Pittman each had 13 points -- with Pittman amassing her total in just 16 minutes -- while Mandy McDivitt scored 10.
The Falcons never trailed, but Butler erased a double-digit deficit, coming all the way back to tie the game late in the first half. BGSU ended the half on a double-digit run, regaining the lead for good.
Uhl got the Falcons on the scoreboard with a three-pointer in the game's first minute. McDivitt hit a triple for the home team at the 18:06 mark, but Pontius immediately fired a long pass ahead to senior Maggie Hennegan to give the Falcons the lead.
Hennegan grabbed a teammate's missed shot, laying the ball back up and in for a 7-3 BGSU advantage. A few moments later, Hennegan kicked the ball out to Prochaska for a left-elbow triple. Prochaska stole the ball and fed Uhl for a layup and a 12-5 BGSU lead at the first media timeout.
After the timeout, Prochaska came up with another steal and headed in for a layup of her own, giving the Brown and Orange a 14-5 advantage. The Bulldogs got back-to-back jumpers to cut BG's lead to six, but Prochaska drained a three-pointer on a long BGSU possession.
That possession saw the Falcons come up with no fewer than four offensive rebounds, and included a Uhl free throw. The four-point possession gave the visitors an 18-9 advantage.
With the Falcons out and running after a Pontius defensive rebound, redshirt sophomore Danielle Havel -- like Steffen a native of Carmel, Ind. -- redirected a pass to a cutting Prochaska, who was fouled in the act of shooting. The senior's free throws put BG ahead by a 20-9 score.
The Bulldogs, however, rallied back. BU scored eight-straight points during a span of four-plus minutes. Bowen hit a nice baseline one-hander, then knocked down a shot after driving down the lane. When Hamilton scored inside, the game was tied, 22-22, and the Falcons took a timeout.
Sophomore Allison Papenfuss hit a layup, but Hamilton answered for the hosts. Prochaska got a runner to drop, but Claire Freeman responded for BU. Finally, however, the Falcons surged ahead.
BGSU scored 10-straight points to end the half. The run began when Hennegan's turnaround fadeaway jumper rolled in, and Steffen followed with a three-pointer from in front of the Butler bench.
Uhl grabbed a defensive rebound, and a BU player went over her back for a foul. Uhl's free throws each were good, and the Falcons had a 33-26 lead. Then, with 17 seconds left in the period, another Prochaska triple gave the Brown and Orange a 10-point lead at the intermission.
The Falcons' 39-34 rebounding advantage in the game included a 21-12 margin in the first half. In the opening 20 minutes, BGSU had 10 offensive rebounds while holding the Bulldogs without an offensive board.
Each team had trouble getting the offense going in the initial moments of the second half. But, the Falcons scored five quick points just prior to the first media timeout. Pontius took a pass from Prochaska and hit a trey from the left wing, and Steffen intercepted a pass at midcourt and headed in all alone for a layup and a 43-30 lead, prompting BU to take time.
Less than 40 seconds later, Prochaska took an inbounds pass and drained a three-pointer, putting the Falcons ahead by 16.
Butler was within 12 points, 52-40, with 12 minutes left, having done much of the damage from the free-throw line. But, Steffen knocked down a triple try out of the 12-minute media timeout, and Pontius converted an 'and-one' runner and hit the ensuing free throw for a 58-40 lead with 11:01 left.
The Bulldogs, however, proceeded to go on a 12-1 run to cut the deficit to single digits. BU held BG without a field goal for a six-and-a-half-minute span.
BGSU's only point during that stretch came on a free throw by Jill Stein with 8:40 left in the game. Then, however, Butler scored 10 in a row, with the first five points coming at the line.
Then, Pittman's steal and layup put the Bulldogs within 10 points at the 6:24 mark. Bowen split a pair of free throws, and Pittman hit a short jumper as the BGSU bench implored the officials for a charging call. The Bulldogs trailed by just seven points, 59-52.
Steffen got herself to the line, stopping that run by hitting a pair of charity tosses. Those free throws would begin a modest 6-0 run for the Brown and Orange.
Bowen was called for an offensive foul, as Uhl took the charge at the defensive end, negating Bowen's layup. Prochaska hit a pull-up jumper with 4:29 left, and the Falcon defense forced Pittman into a traveling violation.
Pontius was fouled and hit a pair of shots at the stripe, giving the Falcons a 65-52 lead. After Hamilton hit a layup, Prochaska grabbed her own miss and put it back up and in while drawing a foul. She completed the three-point play to give the Falcons a 68-54 lead. On BG's next possession, Prochaska spotted Uhl making a nifty cut to the basket, hitting her classmate for an easy layup with exactly three minutes left.
The Bulldogs battled until the very end. McDivitt's three-pointer with just over a minute left cut BG's lead to 70-59, and the hosts got as close as eight points after Pittman's three-point play. But, a Prochaska free throw closed the scoring as the Falcons salted away the victory.
"I thought our starters were terrific," said Miller. "A lot of different people stepped up at different times, and that is a really big road win for us."
In addition to her total of 28 points, Prochaska had six rebounds, four assists and four steals. She led all players in steals, and tied for game honors in assists. Hennegan had eight points and five rebounds for the Brown and Orange, while Pontius had four assists on the night.
BG hit nine three-pointers, while holding the Bulldogs into a 2-of-15 performance from long distance. Prochaska hit four triples, and Steffen was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
"Lauren was very aggressive at the offensive end in stretches," said Miller. "She shot the ball well ... It was one of those nights where you looked up (at the scoreboard) and she was almost at 30 points. When we needed a big play, when we needed a big basket, she was there for us.
"Chrissy hit some really timely 3's, some big 3's for us, and she defended very well. She was very, very good all night for us in a homecoming game for her."
The Falcons now prepare for Mid-American Conference play, which begins next Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2011) at Ohio University.
"When we wake up tomorrow, we're zero and zero," said Miller. "We are very excited about our non-conference start, but a week from now, it means nothing. We will get back to work to prepare for a very tough Mid-American Conference schedule."
