Friday's match at the PTC is BG's last before beginning MAC play
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, riding a three-match winning streak, is preparing for the final match of the non-conference portion of the season. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean host Duquesne University Friday night (March 19) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
BGSU, 9-3 in dual matches this season, is coming off of a pair of wins in Orlando, Fla. The Falcons downed South Dakota (7-0; March 9) and Temple (5-2; March 10) during the team's spring trip. Last Friday's (March 12) scheduled match vs. North Dakota was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston each posted a total of four wins on the trip. The duo teamed up for wins vs. the Coyotes and Owls at the top doubles flight, and each player won both of her singles matches as well -- Chiricosta at the number-one flight and Eccleston at flight four.
Sophomore Jessica Easdale was a perfect 3-0 in her spring-trip action, with a pair of singles wins at the fifth flight, while senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel each picked up a total of three victories on the trip.
Duquesne enters Friday's match with records of 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Dukes have won two-straight matches, including a league victory over Dayton (6-1; March 13). Most recently, DU posted a home victory over Coastal Carolina, a team ranked #69 in the nation. The Dukes posted a 4-3 home win over the Chanticleers on Monday afternoon (March 16).
DU's seven-woman roster includes a pair of Ohio natives -- senior Rachel McGowan (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and sophomore Tara Majdalani. Majdalani will be playing in her hometown on Friday, as she is a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, and attended Notre Dame Academy.
The Falcons lead Duquesne, 4-0, in the all-time series between the teams, including a 5-2 road win in last season's dual-match opener (Jan. 16, 2009). That match marked the first time the Falcons and Dukes had met in Pennsylvania.
The Brown and Orange picked up a 6-1 neutral-site win over DU four years ago in Orlando, Fla., as part of the Falcons' school-record 11-match winning streak. Three seasons ago (Feb. 9, 2007), BGSU edged Duquesne by a 4-3 count at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in the greater Toledo area. The teams met at Shadow Valley again two seasons ago (Feb. 16, 2008), with the Falcons posting a 5-2 victory as part of another 11-match win streak.
This is the fifth consecutive season that BGSU and DU have met in dual-match play.
Following Friday's match, the Brown and Orange will play eight consecutive MAC regular-season contests, beginning with a road trip next weekend. BGSU will play at Ball State next Friday (March 26), then will face defending MAC regular-season and tourney champs Miami the following day (Saturday, March 27) in Oxford. BG's MAC home opener is Friday, April 2, vs. Western Michigan.
