BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green may not have been able to complete the sweep of the RedHawks over the weekend after taking two of three games in their home series this weekend, but the accomplishments of two Falcons were recognized by the conference office today. After helping the team compile a 3-1 record over the last week of action, #T.J. Blanton and Brennan Smith# took both Mid-American Conference East Division awards after being named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Blanton hit for a .471 batting average (8-for-17) with a slugging percentage of 1.059 over the last four games. He notched nine RBI, six runs scored, three home runs and stole three bases on the week. The senior was a triple away from achieving the cycle in Friday's 12-8 win over the RedHawks after notching a single, double and solo home run. His sixth inning single scored two of the three Falcons run in the inning. Blanton posted a trio of singles on Saturday and stole a pair of bases on the day in the Falcons' 7-6 win. His single in the fourth inning was the second two-RBI single of the weekend.
The senior ended the weekend with a two-run home run in his first plate appearance of the weekend giving the Falcons an early 2-0 lead in Sunday's loss. Between Friday and Saturday, he went a combined 6-for-9 with four runs scored and four RBI. Of his three home runs on the week, two came against the RedHawks while the other was an inside-the-park homer against Cleveland State (4/28) in an 8-2 Bowling Green win.
Smith tied a career and season high with 10 strikeouts against the RedHawks on Friday (4/30). He struck out the side in the third inning of Friday's 12-8 win and twice struck out two batters in an inning. He retired seven straight batters between the fourth and sixth inning, including sitting down the RedHawks in order twice in that time. In his 7.1 innings pitched, Smith allowed five hits and two walks, good for a WHIP of 0.95 on the day. He earned his fourth win of the season and has won his last three starts dating back to April 16.
Blanton has now earned the Player of the Week honor for the second time this season. Smith earns his first Pitcher of the Week of 2010 and the second of his career.
