VonderBrink, Falcons Strike Late for 2-1 Win over CSU
September 12, 2010 | Women's Soccer
Stephenson's three-point day helps BGSU to victory
Sophomore Sarah VonderBrink's goal with just over six minutes left in regulation lifted the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 12). The non-conference match was held at a sun-drenched Cochrane Field on the BGSU campus.

The win was BG's first of the season. The Falcons are now 1-5-1 on the year. The Vikings drop to 4-2-2 overall.
Falcon senior co-captain Katie Stephenson had a three-point day, scoring the first goal of the afternoon and picking up an assist on VonderBrink's winner. All three goals were scored in a span of less than 12 minutes late in the second half.
Taylor Miller scored for the visitors, tying the match less than three minutes after Stephenson had broken the scoreless deadlock. VonderBrink, however, headed home junior Megan Amann's cross at the 83:34 to give the Falcons the lead for good.
Senior Alexa Arsenault made two saves in goal, while her CSU counterpart, Kelly Zinkiewich, made three stops at the other end.
It took over 71 minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard, but the Falcons finally broke the scoreless drought, converting off of a corner kick. Amann took the corner kick, which caromed off of one of several players battling for the ball in the penalty area. Sophomore Emily Rothwell found freshman Morgan Burgner at the top of the box, and Burgner hit a one-timer toward the goal.
Her shot never reached the net, however, as Stephenson deftly redirected the shot with a header from just a few yards out. Zinkiewich could not react to the change of direction in time to make a save, and the ball bounded into the right side of the goal.
Less than three minutes later, however, the Vikings tied the score. CSU's leading scorer, Natalie Daniels, played a ball to Miller on the right side of the pitch. Miller made a cut-back move to create some space, and blasted a shot into the far-side netting. With 15-plus minutes remaining, the score was 1-1.
But, VonderBrink untied the score with 6:26 left. Stephenson began the play, possessing the ball in the center of the field. She passed the ball out wide to Amann, who promptly beat her would-be defender down the left sideline. Amann took the ball to the touch line and hit a cross that, for a split-second, looked like it might head out of bounds near the Cochrane Field scoreboard.
No such thing happened, though, as VonderBrink reached the crossing ball and headed it back to the left. The ball went over Zinkiewich's head, bounced and nestled in the netting on the left side of the goal.
VonderBrink's goal proved to be the last shot attempt by either team on the afternoon. The Falcons controlled possession for most of the remainder of the match, and salted away the win.
BGSU held a 15-8 advantage in total shot attempts, and put five of those shots on frame as opposed to three for CSU. Each team hit the woodwork in the second half, as the Vikings' Daniels saw a shot ring off the left post and out of play for a goal kick with just under 10 minutes gone in the period.
Just two minutes later, Falcon junior Katelyn Turner's blast hit off the crossbar. That shot came after freshman Tracy Togba had stolen the ball in the CSU end of the field and fed it to Stephenson. The co-captain's through-ball put Turner in position for her hard shot, which was inches away from breaking the scoreless draw.
Turner, who led all players with four shot attempts in the match, saw one of those shots sail just over the crossbar with under two minutes gone in the second period. WIth a defender draped all over her, Turner still got a shot off from the top of the box. But, Turner, who was falling backward, could not keep the shot from going high of the target.
Midway through the second half, the visitors had what appeared to be a grade-A scoring chance, as Miller played a diagonal ball into the box. A furious scramble ensued in the six-yard area as CSU got off at least one shot, and a BG defender cleared the ball off the line after a rebound. But, the play had been whistled dead due to an offside call.
Each team had a scoring chance just five minutes before Stephenson's goal. Daniels, who led the Vikes with three shot attempts, fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area, at close range. But, the ball was blocked out of play by a Falcon backliner, resulting in a corner kick.
Arsenault leapt high in the air to grab that corner, and immediately uncorked a long punt that found Turner on the other end. The Falcon junior hit another hard shot, but Zinkiewich was able to get her hands up and make the stop. The ball caromed high in the air and headed toward the upper-right corner of the goal, but Zinkiewich grabbed it a split-second before Turner could get a noggin on it.
After Stephenson and Miller exchanged goals, VonderBrink had a chance to give the Falcons the lead. Rothwell spotted Amann on the left side of the pitch, and Amann played a crossing ball in a harbinger of things to come. On this occasion, however, VonderBrink's shot went wide with 12-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
What would prove to be CSU's last shot attempt of the day came with seven minutes remaining, as Jessica Bound hit a hard shot from distance that was parried by Arsenault.
The first half had seen a few solid scoring chances as well, including one from Falcon senior Jackie Tamerlano just six minutes in. Amann and Burgner were involved in the buildup of the play, with Burgner playing Tamerlano through on the right side of the penalty area. Tamerlano's low shot eluded the diving effort of the CSU 'keeper, but rolled just wide of the far (left) post.
The visitors had two chances less than a minute apart. Approximately one-third of the way through the opening half, Sylvia Olsby got some velocity behind a shot, but hit it directly at Arsenault. Then, Aliie Riczo chested down a cross from the right side and fired just wide.
BGSU controlled much of the midfield play on Sunday afternoon, and had a scoring chance with six minutes to go until halftime. Freshman Kailey Paszko started that play from the midfield line, getting the ball to senior co-captain Alicia Almond. Almond's forward ball hit sophomore Keely Chandler in stride, and Chandler hit a cross from the right side of the field. Turner got low to redirect that crossing ball, putting some force behind a header that was aimed toward the far post. But, the ball rolled just wide of the frame.
A minute later, Stephenson's hard shot was saved by Zinkiewich, for the last shot on goal by either team in the half.
The win over the Vikings was the Falcons' third in as many tries. The teams had not met since the 2005 season, CSU's second as a varsity program.
The Falcons have one more weekend of non-league action before the Mid-American Conference slate begins. BGSU will host Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 17), then will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for a Sunday (Sept. 19) match vs. Indiana State.
