The Bowling Green State University tennis team had a successful start to the 2010-11 season, to say the least. Five Falcons advanced to the final of their respective singles flight as the team kicked off the season at the BGSU Invitational Saturday (Sept. 18).

BGSU competitors combined to go 12-2 in singles play, while all three of the Falcons' doubles teams won their first-round matches on day one of the two-day, nine-team invitational. No team scores are kept at the BGSU Invitational, but individual champions will be crowned at each of the eight singles and four doubles flights.
Senior Christine Chiricosta won a pair of matches at the top flight, while freshman Emily Reuland won the first two singles matches of her career to advance to the championship match at the second flight. Another first-year Falcon, sophomore transfer Mary Hill, went 2-0 at the fifth flight to advance to the final.
Sophomores Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb were undefeated in singles action at the sixth and seventh flights, respectively, on Saturday.
In doubles action, all three Falcon teams were victorious. Those teams included Christine Chiricosta and Eccleston at the top flight, Hill and freshman Nikki Chiricosta at the second flight and Reuland and junior Jessica Easdale at flight number three. Grubb teamed up with Youngstown State's Hannah Patten to compete in doubles at the fourth flight.
BGSU's total of five players to advance to a singles flight championship is the highest of any of the nine teams. Cleveland State has four such players, while Cincinnati and Toledo have two apiece.
The BGSU Invitational concludes on Sunday (Sept. 19), with play beginning at 9:00 a.m. The bulk of the matches will be played at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, with some matches held at Bowling Green High School.
