SCHEDULING QUIRK
All five of BGSU's 2011 games vs. MAC East Division foes are on the road. Last year, the Falcons played all five intra-divisional matches within the confines of Cochrane Field.
MAC TOURNAMENT RACE HEATING UP
Believe it or not, the 12 MAC women's soccer teams are more than halfway through the conference schedule. Currently, BGSU is fifth in the MAC's East Division and ninth overall. The Falcons have a 2-4-0 league record, good for six points (teams earn three points for a win and one point for a tie).
According to the MAC's 2011-12 handbook, the eight teams with the highest point accumulation, regardless of division, will qualify for the MAC Tournament. BGSU trails both Akron and Buffalo by just two points, and the Falcons are three points behind Kent State and four points in back of East Division-leading Ohio. In the West Division, Western Michigan has nine points, three more than the Falcons. In addition to this weekend's games, BGSU still has games remaining vs. WMU, Northern Illinois and Miami.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons will enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-10-0 on the season, and BGSU is 2-4 in MAC play. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange split a pair of 2-1 matches. BG came from behind for an overtime victory against Eastern Michigan at Cochrane Field on Friday (Oct. 7), then fell on the road to Central Michigan Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9).
The Falcons opened the conference portion of the schedule with a 2-1 win at Buffalo in the conference opener (Sept. 23), but BG then suffered shutout losses at Kent State (1-0 in OT; Sept. 25) and at home to Toledo (1-0; Sept. 30) and Ball State (2-0; Oct. 2). BGSU is 2-5-0 at home and 3-5-0 on the road this season to date. In league play, the Falcons are 1-2-0 both at Cochrane Field and in hostile venues.
Senior captain Alyssa Zuccaro leads the team in scoring, with 10 points this season. She has five goals this year to date, while no fewer than seven of her teammates have one goal apiece. 'Z' had both of the Falcons' goals at UB, and also scored vs. Niagara (Sept. 4), Youngstown State (Sept. 11) and EMU.
Junior Sarah VonderBrink is second on the Falcons in scoring. Her six points include one goal and a team-leading four assists. Those assists include helpers on the game-winning goals at YSU and UB, and her goal was a match-winner as well, at Cleveland State.
In addition to VonderBrink, sophomores Ashley Miller, Kaitlyn Tobin and Tracy Togba and freshmen Kaylee Draper, Sidney Huth and Kenzie Schlemitz each have one goal this season. Tobin's goal was a 90th-minute winner vs. the Penguins, while Huth's first collegiate goal was an overtime game-winning strike against EMU.
Senior Megan Amann has three assists this fall to date, while Miller and sophomores Ivi Casagrande and Madeline Wideman have one. Amann's assists came on VonderBrink's winning goal at CSU, Zuccaro's goal at YSU and Schlemitz's score at CMU.
Redshirt junior Becca Ison has started 14 matches this season to date. Ison has played 1262-plus minutes, and has 75 saves along with two shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.78. Ison made a career-high 11 stops in the Illinois State game, and she had nine saves at MSU and eight vs. Detroit, Niagara and Toledo.
True junior Laura Arnold has seen action in two matches, playing the final seven-plus minutes at Buffalo before starting the Kent State contest. Arnold has a 1-1-0 record, two saves and a GAA of just 0.88.
Sophomore Alyssa Carmack is the lone player to have played every second of all 15 matches this fall, while Draper has played 1342 of the 1,364-plus minutes. Zuccaro has been on the field for 1306 minutes, while Ison has played 1262 minutes, redshirt freshman Kylie Briem 1197 and junior Emily Rothwell 1169. Briem, Carmack, Draper and Zuccaro each have started every match this fall to date, while Ison has made 14 starts and Rothwell and redshirt sophomore Jenny Fowler 13 starts apiece.
Head coach Andy Richards and his staff, assistants Kellie Evans and Jimmy Walker, welcomed back a total of 17 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club. BGSU's returning players combined for nearly 67 percent of the team's goals and almost 73% of the assists a year ago. Four of the Falcons' top-five scorers returned from the 2010 campaign, including Zuccaro, who led the team in scoring. Zuccaro had one-third of the team's goals, with eight, and also led the Brown and Orange with six assists. Her total of 22 points was the highest by a BGSU player since the 2005 season.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons split a pair of 2-1 decisions last week. On Friday (Oct. 7), BGSU trailed at halftime, but got a second-half goal from senior Alyssa Zuccaro and an overtime strike from freshman Sidney Huth for a victory over Eastern Michigan at Cochrane Field. Redshirt junior Becca Ison made four saves to pick up the win in goal.
On Sunday (Oct. 9) in Mount Pleasant, BGSU snapped Central Michigan's shutout streak, but could not halt the Chippewas' unbeaten streak. Freshman Kenzie Schlemitz scored her first collegiate goal, and became the first MAC player to score against Central this year. Ison had four stops in goal.
LEAH'S BACK!
Redshirt junior Leah Johnson checked into Friday's (Oct. 7) Eastern Michigan match with 19:06 left in the first half. For Johnson, it marked the first game action since the final contest of the 2009 season. After starting 40 games over her first two years, and earning team Defensive MVP honors in '09, Johnson missed all of the 2010 season after suffering an injury during the preseason. She played a total of 31 minutes on Friday, and saw 21 more minutes of action on Sunday (Oct. 9) at Central Michigan.
HUTH IS GOLDEN
Falcon freshman Sidney Huth picked a great time to get her first collegiate goal. Huth scored just 93 seconds into overtime to give BGSU a 2-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Friday (Oct. 7). Huth's 'Golden Goal' was the first by a Falcon in almost three years, since a strike by Corbie Yee on Oct. 10, 2008. The complete list of BGSU's OT winners...

YOU CAN'T SPELL 'GOALZ' WITHOUT 'Z'
Senior Alyssa Zuccaro's goal in Friday's Eastern Michigan match increased her career total to 20. She has moved into a tie for third place on the BGSU career list. 'Z' is now deadlocked with both Jill Conover (1999-2002) and Tracy Gleixner (1998-2002) on that list. That trio trails only Kristy Coppes (52 goals from 2001-04) and Samantha Meister (28 goals from 2002-05).
A FEW MORE NOTES ABOUT ALYSSA ZUCCARO
• Senior Alyssa Zuccaro now has a career total of 50 points, ranking sixth on the BGSU list. She passed Britt Anderson (49 points from 2002-05) in the EMU match, and is one point behind Corbie Yee (51 points from 2005-08).
• Three of Zuccaro's five goals on the season have come in MAC play. She scored twice in the win at Buffalo, for her first multi-goal game of the season and the third of her career. Zuccaro leads the Falcons with five goals and 10 points this season.
• Zuccaro led the Falcons in goals (eight), assists (six) and points (22) last season. Her 2010 goal and point totals were the highest by a BGSU player since 2005 (Samantha Meister, eight goals and 22 points).
• In her Falcon career, Zuccaro has 10 goals in home matches and 10 goals away from home. 'Z' has scored a total of 26 points (10 goals, six assists) at Cochrane Field and 24 (10 goals, four assists) in road or neutral-site matches.

FALCON FIRSTS
Freshmen Sidney Huth and Kenzie Schlemitz each scored their first collegiate goals over the weekend. Huth scored the OT winner in Friday's contest vs. Eastern Michigan, while Schlemitz became the first MAC player to score against Central Michigan this season.
Additionally, sophomore Ivi Casagrande picked up her first collegiate point on Friday vs. EMU. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native put a beautiful cross directly onto the head of senior Alyssa Zuccaro, leading to BGSU's first goal vs. the Eagles.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, now in his 12th season at the helm, has proven himself to be one of the top mentors in MAC women's soccer history. He has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 107-118-26, and a record of 57-59-15 in MAC regular-season play. Richards picked up the 100th victory of his collegiate head-coaching career in the Falcons' 3-2 win at Indiana State last fall.
Richards' teams perennially play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the MAC. In his first decade-plus in BG, he has led the Falcons to the MAC Tournament on eight occasions, with the team advancing to the semifinals seven times. BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has more trips to the league tourney title game than Richards' five. Two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships. Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown.
A native of Warwick, England, Richards earned his Bachelor of Education degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1989. He received his Master of Education degree from Oregon State in 1997.
RICHARDS IS IN THE TOP-FOUR
Falcon head coach Andy Richards is one of the winningest mentors in MAC women's soccer history. Currently, Richards ranks fourth on the conference's all-time wins list.

THE OPPONENTS
Akron will enter Friday's match with an overall record of 5-5-2 this season, and the Zips are 2-2-2 in MAC play. After a five-game unbeaten streak in which the Zips outscored their opponents, 10-0, UA is winless in the last three contests. That stretch includes one-goal losses to Western Michigan and Ball State on the road, and – most recently – a 2-2 draw at Toledo on Sunday (Oct. 9). The Zips are 2-1-1 in home games to date. Ashley Hughes leads the team with seven points, while Rachel Phillip and Karina Atkinson have six apiece. Hughes and Phillip each have three goals on the year. Jeny Wolbert has played in all 12 matches in goal, and has 56 saves, five shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.94. Head coach Chris Pfau welcomed back 20 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team. The 2010 Zips went 7-11-2 overall and 5-5-1 in the MAC. The school's athletics web site is www.GoZips.com.
Ohio is 6-7-1 overall, and the Bobcats will take a 3-2-1 MAC mark into Friday's home contest vs. Miami. Ohio currently sits atop the MAC's East Division. After winning four of the previous five matches, the 'Cats suffered a 2-0 loss at Toledo last Friday (Oct. 7) before playing host Ball State to a 1-1 draw on Sunday (Oct. 9). Ohio is 3-3-0 in home games this year to date. Individually, Kelsey Pichel leads the team with four goals and nine points, while Toye Famodu has seven points, including three goals. Mattie Liston has started all 14 matches in goal, and has 76 saves, four shutouts and a GAA of 1.12. Head coach Stacy Strauss welcomed back 19 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from a year ago. The 2010 Bobcats went 6-9-4 overall and 3-5-3 in MAC action. The school's athletics web site is OhioBobcats.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Akron, 7-2-1, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Zips are unbeaten in the last two meetings. Last year, the teams played to a 2-2 tie at Cochrane Field (Oct. 15, 2010), with Madeline Wideman recording a goal and an assist for the Falcons, and Megan Amann scoring BGSU's other goal. Two years ago, also at Cochrane, UA's Liz Cloutier scored with just 1:09 left in the second half to give her team a 2-1 win (Oct. 11, 2009). Cloutier scored the tying goal in last year's match. She has two career goals, both coming against the Falcons. In the last meeting in Akron (Oct. 5, 2008), the Brown and Orange posted a 2-0 win, scoring twice in the last 12-plus minutes of the second half. The Falcons won the first five series meetings, but BG is 2-2-1 in the last five matchups. BGSU is 4-1-1 in home matches and 3-1-0 in away games in the series with Akron.

FRIES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG (a few random BGSU notes)
While the Falcons have not beaten Ohio in Athens, BGSU has enjoyed some success at Chessa Field ... two of the bigger wins in program history took place there, as the 2004 Falcons posted wins over Western Michigan (4-1) and Central Michigan (2-0) to capture the team's first-ever MAC Tournament championship • BGSU's goal at CMU Sunday (Oct. 9) broke the Chippewas' lengthy shutout streak ... Central had not allowed a goal since Sept. 13, 2011, and had not surrendered a score to a MAC team all year • both of BGSU's MAC wins have been 2-1, come-from-behind affairs ... the Falcons gave up a goal in the opening minute of the Buffalo match (Sept. 23), but rallied to win on a pair of Alyssa Zuccaro goals ... on Friday (Oct. 7) vs. Eastern Michigan, Zuccaro scored the Falcons' first goal, before freshman Sidney Huth scored in overtime for the win • Zuccaro's goal on Friday ended a BGSU scoreless streak of 334:29 ... 'Z' had scored BG's last goal, at the 88:57 mark of that Buffalo match • junior Sarah VonderBrink had an assist on Zuccaro's goal vs. EMU ... VonderBrink now has a team-leading four assists on the year, and is second on the team in points, with six ... she has career totals of seven assists and 15 points.
WORKING OVERTIME
Friday's win over Eastern Michigan gives the Falcons an all-time record of 19-18-30 in overtime matches ... here are a few more fascinating facts regarding BGSU and OT contests ...
• BGSU has a 10-13-13 record in overtime matches at Cochrane Field, a 7-3-15 mark in road games and a 2-2-2 ledger in neutral-site OT contest.
• The EMU match, as mentioned, was the Falcons' first overtime victory in nearly three years. Prior to Friday, the Falcons had been winless in the last 12 OT games (0-5-7). The first four matches during that 12-match streak were ties, completing a stretch from 2007-09 in which BGSU was undefeated in 13 consecutive OT contests (4-0-9).
• Believe it or not, the Falcons lost just once in the first 23 overtime games on the road, going 7-1-15. But, BGSU has lost the last two road games, both by 1-0 scores. The Falcons fell at Western Michigan in double-OT last season (Oct. 22, 2010), and lost at Kent last month (Sept. 25, 2011).
• After Sidney Huth's goal on Friday, three of BGSU's 19 overtime wins now have come against Eastern Michigan. BGSU also has three OT victories against Kent State, and the Falcons have played a total of nine overtime matches vs. the Golden Flashes, more than any other opponent. If you're still reading these notes, you'll probably enjoy perusing a list of BGSU's all-time OT records vs. opponents.

If you're still reading these notes, you'll probably enjoy perusing a list of BGSU's all-time OT records vs. opponents.
