Falcons Host Triangular Meet in Fremont on Saturday
October 18, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The exhibition season is over for the Bowling Green State University swimming team, and the Falcons open the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 22) by hosting a triangular meet with John Carroll and Oakland University -- in Fremont, Ohio.
In an attempt to provide greater exposure for Falcon swimming and as a means to give back to the local swimming community, the Falcons will take their show on the road to Fremont Ross High School.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be comprised of over a dozen events. These include the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, five freestyle races (50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000), as well as the 200 individual medley and 200 butterfly. The meet also features two relays: the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.
Falcons head coach Petra Martin said, "This is something different that I wanted to try. It's a great opportunity for the local swimming community to come and watch a great college meet. It will also introduce some of the younger local swimmers to the collegiate experience."
The meet will take place Fremont Ross' Hawk-Bucci Natatorium. The natatorium is a new facility that was dedicated on December 1, 2010 in honor of Hal Hawk and Art Bucci.
Bucci is the former swimming head coach and current athletic director at Fremont Ross. During his 11-year tenure from 1974-85, Bucci was Northwest Ohio coach of the year twice and Swim Coaches' Association coach of the year in 1980.
Hawk, a business owner in Fremont, was captain of Bucci's first team in 1974 and later swam four seasons at John Carroll, one of the participating schools in this weekend's meet.
Martin said, "We are excited to race in such a great facility. The Hawk-Bucci Natatorium is a state-of-the-art aquatic facility with all the bells and whistles that you want to have for a great swim meet."
She added, "We are looking forward to competing at their fast pool and filling up the stands away from home. All the folks in Fremont have been very helpful with putting this event on, and we are looking for a great showcase. We are excited about this new experience for our program, as well as for Fremont and the local community."
