With the victory, the Falcons improve to 6-2 on the season, while the loss drops the Lady Govs to 2-7 on the year. BGSU has won six-straight games after an 0-2 start, while APSU has lost seven in a row after winning the first two games of the year.
Redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers led the way with 19 points. Rogers scored 15 of those points in the first half.
The victory was the 240th overall win for Curt Miller, moving him into a tie for second place on the Mid-American Conference list. Miller is tied with former Toledo coach Mark Ehlen on that list.
BGSU forced the Govs into 26 turnovers, a season-high total for a Falcon opponent. And, the Brown and Orange came up with a total of 16 steals, also a season high, on the night. Rogers and junior Allison Papenfuss tied for the lead with three steals apiece, while three other Falcons had two each.
The Falcons had a 29-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
BG trailed by a 10-3 score after Leslie Martinez came up with a steal and easy layup for the visitors with 11:39 left in the first half. Rogers took a pass from freshman Deborah Hoekstra and converted a three-point play to double the Falcons' point total, but Meghan Bussaberger quickly answered with a layup at the other end, giving Austin Peay a 12-6 lead. But, the Falcon offense was just getting untracked.
BGSU had runs of 9-0, 8-0 and 11-0 before the half, as the Falcons outscored APSU by a 28-6 count in the final 10:26 of the period.
After making just one of 13 shots to begin the game, the Falcons -- starting with that Rogers 'and-one' layup, were 11-of-17 from the floor over the remainder of the first half. BG made five-straight field-goal attempts to end the period.
Trailing by that 12-6 score, the Falcons got a three-pointer from freshman Jasmine Matthews to begin the 9-0 run. Matthews slipped out to the left corner, took a pass from senior Jessica Slagle and hit a three-pointer to cut the Govs' lead in half.
The Falcons got the ball inside to Rogers on back-to-back possessions, which resulted in BG's taking the lead for good. Sophomore Jillian Halfhill assisted on both layups, including a nifty one-handed bounce pass across the lane that resulted in a wide-open layup for Rogers and a 13-12 lead for the home team with 8:49 on the clock.
Just under two minutes later, the redshirt soph poked the ball away from Nicole Olszewski, picked it up and headed in for an easy layup and a three-point advantage.
Bussabarger hit a layup to snap the 9-0 run, but the Falcons then scored the next eight points. Six of those points came at the free-throw line, with redshirt junior Danielle Havel beginning and ending that run with a pair of charity tosses. Rogers also made two free throws during that time, while junior Chrissy Steffen knifed through traffic to grab a teammate's miss and lay the ball up and in.
The 8-0 run was answered by a pair of layups by the Lady Govs, bringing the visitors within five points at 23-18. But, a Matthews jumper, this time from just inside the three-point line, gave the Falcons the first two of 11-straight points to end the period. BGSU went 5-for-5 from the floor during that run, with Rogers and Steffen hitting two shots apiece.
After the Matthews jumper, Rogers came up with another steal and layup, prompting APSU coach Carrie Daniels to take a timeout. That timeout, however, did not slow the Falcons' momentum at all.
The Lady Govs were called for an offensive foul, and Steffen took a Matthews pass and knocked down a three-pointer at the 1:14 mark. After another BGSU steal, Matthews fed Rogers for a layup with 39 seconds left.
The Falcon defense forced a miss, and Slagle rebounded the ball for the home team. With the clock running down, Matthews picked up her third assist on as many baskets, feeding Steffen for a jumper just inside the foul line as the buzzer sounded. The Brown and Orange took a 34-18 lead into the break.
Whitney Hanley and Jasmine Rayner hit layups for Austin Peay to cut BG's lead to 14 points early in the second period, but the Lady Govs would get no closer. BGSU steadily increased the lead, which reached a game-high 37 points before the Govs hit a three-pointer with just 16 seconds remaining.
After Rayner's layup, the Falcons scored the game's next eight points, with Papenfuss scoring the final four to give the Falcons a 44-22 lead with 13:43 on the clock.
Moments later, a Slagle three-pointer began a 14-0 run that removed all doubt about the outcome. Six different players scored during that run, and when the smoke had cleared, the Falcons led by a 60-27 score.
The Lady Govs were scoreless for a span of over eight minutes while the Falcons went on that run.
Sophomore Noelle Yoder hit a three-pointer to cap that 14-point BG run. After Shelby Olszewski knocked down a jumper to stop that run, but Yoder answered with a second triple at the 6:09 mark.
Yoder joined Rogers in double digits for the Falcons, scoring 10 points in just 14 minutes. Papenfuss had a season-high eight points and led the Falcons with eight rebounds, while Slagle and Steffen scored seven points each.
No Austin Peay player reached double figures in the scoring column. Shelby Olszewski led the Lady Govs with eight points, while Hanley added seven.
The Falcons, paced by Papenfuss, had a 42-36 rebounding advantage on Friday night. BG, after being outrebounded in each of the first five games of the season, now has had more boards than the opponent in each of the last three.
Freshman point guard Logan Pastor more than doubled her career rebounding high, with seven, while three of her teammates had five each. That list included Havel, Steffen and sophomore Jill Stein. Matthews had a game-high four assists on the night.
BGSU went 16-of-19 at the free-throw line, for a success rate of 84.2 percent, while APSU was just 3-for-9 at the stripe.
BGSU will return to the Stroh Center court on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 11), taking on Jacksonville University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
