Falcons post 7-0 win in two-and-a-half hours
The Bowling Green State University tennis team made quick work of host Youngstown State University Saturday evening (March 19), picking up a 7-0 win over the Penguins. The non-conference dual match was held at the Boardman Tennis Center.
BGSU needed less than two-and-a-half hours to finish the job and improve to 9-3 in dual matches this season to date.
The Falcons swept the three doubles matches, with senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston losing just two games in their top-flight match. For Chiricosta, the win was the 82nd doubles victory of her career, putting her just two shy of matching the school record.
Sophomores Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson picked up a win at the second flight, improving to 2-0 in doubles play this season to date. At the third flight, a pair of first-year Falcons earned the victory, as freshman Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Mary Hill picked up an 8-3 win.
BGSU was fairly dominant in singles play, winning 10 of 12 sets by scores of 6-0 or 6-1. Nikki Chiricosta, Hill and freshman Emily Reuland each lost just one total game in their matches, with Chiricosta winning at the third flight, Hill at the fourth and Reuland at the fifth.
Eccleston was a winner at the second flight, with both of her sets ending in 6-1 scores. At the sixth level, Johnson downed Hannah Patten by the identical result.
Christine Chiricosta, already the school record-holder in singles and combined career wins, split her two sets with Margarita Sadovnikova at the top flight, before gutting out a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker. She now has 83 singles wins and 165 overall career victories.
The Falcons now turn their attention to Mid-American Conference play, beginning league action next weekend with a pair of matches on the road. BGSU will face Buffalo on Friday (March 25), before meeting Akron (March 26) the following day.
