Falcons Offense Rears Head but Outscored by Illinois State

WINTER HAVEN, Flor. -- The Bowling Green offense hit double-digit run totals for the first time this season in Sunday afternoon's game with the Illinois State. However, the Redbirds' bats were just as hot, scoring 18 runs over nine innings to pull away with an 18-10 victory over BGSU in the Falcons' second game at the RussMatt Invitational.

Three Bowling Green hitters recorded multiple hits on the day. Brandon Howard (Cincinatti, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI coming into the game in relief of Jon Berti in the seventh inning. Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) also had a pair of hits and runs scored plus one RBI in the loss while freshman Andrew Kubuski (Elyria, Ohio) finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) took the loss after allowing six runs in his 3.1 innings pitched and 17 batters faced. Three freshmen pitchers also took to the hill following Matt Malewitz's 1.2 innings of relief, The first-year hurlers combined for four innings, gave up nine runs (seven earned) and struck out four batters.
Bowling Green surrendered 11 runs between innings four through six and trailed 12-3 by the end of the sixth inning. They made a run to catch up scoring three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth, but allowed two runs in the final three innings to nullify their comeback effort.
The Falcons will now play Lehigh University in their third game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Tournament.
