April 10, 2011 | Women's Golf
FINAL RESULTS (.pdf)
After a hot start to the 2010-11 season, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team fell on hard times, as they were unable to score better than 328 in any of their last eight rounds before this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10), those hard times came to an end.
The individual round scores were the lowest for Bowling Green since a streak of seven straight 316-or-better rounds to start the season, and the eighth place finish was the best for the team since they tied for sixth (out of 14 teams) at the Ball State Cardinal Classic.
The team's per-round average improves by over one stroke, to 321.27, thanks to this weekend's efforts. The current mark would set a new team record if the season ended today. On the course, the Falcons were led by freshman Bailey Arnold, who had the best tournament of her young career. Arnold earned a career-best finish by finishing in a tie for seventh place; it is the first top-ten result for a current Falcon this season. Arnold shot three consecutive rounds in the 70s for the first time, as well.
Her total score of 226 (74-78-74) ranked second among all Mid-American Conference players in the tournament (Toledo and Ohio also competed), and she ended the tournament just two strokes out of the top five. Arnold's team-leading scoring average improved by one stroke to 79.69.
Team co-captain Lauren Glew provided senior leadership and earned her second top-20 finish of the season. Glew carded rounds of 78, 75 and 79 on the way to a tournament total of 232 and a tie for 19th place. She has now scored under 80 in eight of the 15 rounds she has played this season, and she ends the weekend with an 81.4 per-round average.
Falcon sophomore Amy Ruthenberg also finished in the top half of the field. After posting rounds of 80 and 81 to start the weekend, Ruthenberg tied a career-best with a third-round 76 to end the 54-hole event at 237 and a tie for 37th place.
Paula DiFrancesco and Kelsey Benson rounded out the team effort for the Falcons in Richmond. DiFrancesco shot a tournament-low 82 in the second round and finished with a three-round score of 249 (84-82-83). Benson matched DiFrancesco's 82 in the second round and sandwiched that between rounds of 86 and 85 for a total of 253.
Playing as an individual, senior Marisa Glew scored an 85 over the first 18 holes and an 88 over the final 18. She withdrew from the second round and ended the tournament with a 36-hole mark of 173.
Next up for BGSU is the team's lone home event of the season, the annual Falcon Invitational. The tournament, held at Stone Ridge Golf Club, will be played next Saturday and Sunday (April 16-17). Many more details about the weekend will be available later this week on BGSUFalcons.com.
