WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- The Bowling Green State University women's golf team continued their early-season solid play, but the squad could only manage an 18th place finish at the 2011 Great Smokies Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday (Sept. 20) at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa.
Bailey Arnold once again led all Falcon individuals and posted her career-best 36-hole score. Arnold carded a 72 on Tuesday, matching her low round of the season to date. Her final total of 149 (77-72) earned a tie for 31st place but was only five strokes outside of the top ten.
Paula DiFrancesco, BGSU's lone senior, completed the 54 holes in Waynesville with a composite 153 for the second consecutive year. She scored a 79 during the final 18 holes after setting a career-low score of 74 on Monday. She tied for 63rd place out of 124 total golfers.
Freshman Shelby Wilson matched DiFrancesco's total (153) as she fired rounds of 77 and 76. Through five rounds of her young career, Wilson has a 76.4 average and has finished second on the team in both tournaments. Fellow freshman Patricia Holt played rounds that ended with matching 80's and a 160 for the tournament.
Amy Ruthenberg, the team's captain, ended play on Tuesday with an 80 for the final round and a 157 for the entire 36 hole event.
Bowling Green compiled a team total of 612 (305-307), just three strokes shy of the team's 36-hole record (609) that was set in Waynesville last September. BGSU finished three strokes behind Belmont and four behind Appalachian State. Western Kentucky (613) and Tennessee Tech (617) immediately trailed the Falcons.
Eastern Kentucky won the event with an even-par 576; tournament host Western Carolina finished second. WCU's Sofie Kvarnstrom won individual medalist honors with a sizzling 135 (69-66), defeating Louisiana-Monroe's Jennifer Park by three strokes.
Bowling Green returns to action next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 26-27) in Hinckley, Ohio at the Cleveland State Invitational before traveling to Nevada in two weeks for the Wolfpack Women's Classic.
