The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team nearly upset No. 21 West Virginia on Saturday night inside Anderson Arena, 193.475-193.225.
The team has been talking all week about taking the next step and it did just that, scoring the second-highest mark in the past two seasons and scored nearly 1.5 points higher than last week's 191.950 versus Central Michigan. BGSU broke 48.000 in three of four events and broke 49.000 on floor alone. Individually BGSU won three of four events and had six of the top-12 finishes (three on each event).
Bowling Green opened the day on vault and scored a season-best 48.675. Freshman Jamilah Ali finished in a tie for first, scoring a 9.825. Dawn Christman and Danielle Wishart were third with 9.775s.
Bars has been an event this season that has haunted BGSU all year. While not perfect, BGSU and Monica Eaton (won the event) had season-bests in rotation two, scoring a 47.550 as a team and 9.800 individually.
WVU lead by .200 after two rotations as the Falcons moved over to the balance beam. Bowling Green scored 48.000, led by Ali, who registered a 9.800 to win the event. Sophomore Megan Harrington finished fourth with a 9.650.
After West Virginia posted a 48.950 on floor to take a large lead into the final rotation, things looks bleak for the Orange and Brown, but managed a 49.000 on floor to come roaring back in the final six routines, but the Mountaineers managed just enough on beam to squeak out the win. Bowling Green had three of the top four finishes on floor with Wishart and Christman finishing in a tie for second (9.825) and Gina Locigno scoring a 9.800 to finish fourth.
Locigno finished second in the all-around (38.650), with Harrington fourth (38.550) and Ali fifth (37.625).
BGSU returns to action next Sunday (Jan. 29) with a trip to Western Michigan. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
