Slater Family To Donate $250,000 For Bring Back The Glory Campaign
January 26, 2012 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green community member Scott Slater, a longtime supporter of the BGSU hockey program, has announced that he and his family are donating $250,000 to the Bring Back the Glory campaign. The gift is a cash/planned gift combination benefitting the hockey program and the Ice Arena.
“Scott and his family have been loyal supporters of Falcon Hockey for decades,” BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “Their generosity is helping us take another step towards rebuilding the program and securing its long-term future. Thanks to leaders like Scott, we are on the home stretch of the campaign with our $5 million goal within sight.”
The Slater family is a fixture at the BG Ice Arena and Scott has been a season-ticket holder since his college days. All six of his children have been active in youth and high school hockey and figure skating. All four of his sons competed on highly successful Bowling Green High School hockey teams, with two winning state titles and two earning at least one state runner-up. Both daughters participated in figure skating.
“My donation was really for two reasons,” Slater said. “First, I truly believe in education and what it means to any person. It is what got me to where I am today. Second, the BG Ice Arena is a staple to BGSU and Bowling Green. It is a significant facility which I could not envision not being there!”
All six of Slater's children graduated from Bowling Green High School and three graduated from Bowling Green State University. Darrel is a BGSU graduate and is working as a CPA, while living in Columbus. Todd attended BGSU, graduated from Owens Community College, and works for Toledo Engineering. Daniel is a BGSU graduate who is at Top Gun School as a pilot in Spokane, Wash. Suzanne is a BGSU graduate working for First Merit Bank in Toledo. Travis is an aeronautical engineer in Savannah, Ga. Sarah attended BGSU and will soon graduate from Owens Community College. She currently works for Toledo Engineering.
Those six children have 12 children as well and three of them are already playing hockey in the Bowling Green Youth Program.
“Scott Slater and his family have been Bowling Green Hockey supporters for a long time,” BGSU hockey coach Chris Bergeron said. “The BG Ice Arena has played a part in all of their lives. Everyone in the Falcon Hockey Family is so thankful for the leadership the Slaters continue to show as we all work to bring the program back to where it belongs.”
Scott and his family will be recognized Saturday between the second and third periods of Bowling Green's home hockey game against Western Michigan, which begins at 7:05 p.m.
The Bring Back the Glory campaign seeks to bolster the hockey program at BGSU, and has generated more than $3 million toward the campaign goal of $5 million. Falcon hockey was a dynasty in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the 1984 NCAA National Championship in Lake Placid. The Falcons outlasted the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the longest collegiate hockey championship game in history, winning 5-4 in four overtimes.
