BG downs Kent State behind double-doubles from Steffen, Rogers
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a relentless rebounding effort to offset a slow shooting night, and the Falcons downed Kent State University, 76-57, Wednesday night (Jan. 4). The game, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at the Stroh Center.

Junior Chrissy Steffen and redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers each had double-doubles to help the Falcons improve to 11-3 on the season. Steffen had a career-high scoring output for the second-straight game, with 27 points, and also set a new rebounding standard, pulling down 10 boards.
Steffen, the reigning MAC Player of the Week, has scored 67 points over the last three games.
Rogers had 16 points and a game-high 11 caroms as BGSU had a 52-28 advantage on the glass. The Falcons also had a 28-5 edge in second-chance points on the night.
Senior Jessica Slagle had 12 points to round out BGSU's double-figure scorers. For the Golden Flashes (1-10), Melanee Stubbs scored 12 points off the bench, while Jamie Hutcheson had 10.
BGSU shot just 34.8 percent from the field, including an 11-of-25 (31.4%) effort after halftime, while the Flashes had a 44.9% field-goal rate for the game. But, the Falcons had a whopping 26 offensive rebounds, nearly matching KSU's entire rebounding total, en route to those 28 second-chance points.
The Falcons had a five-point possession and two four-point trips down the floor in the victory.
BG never trailed, but the Falcons also couldn't pull away from the pesky Flashes until the late stages of the game. Slagle opened the scoring with a layup after a Rogers steal, and Steffen followed with a putback for a 4-0 lead. The Brown and Orange would take a 12-4 lead with just under six minutes gone, as both junior Allison Papenfuss and Rogers had offensive rebounds and layups, and Rogers added another layup.
The Falcons' lead increased to nine points, 18-9, after Steffen sandwiched a pair of three-point field goals around a Leslie Schaefer layup. Steffen had a career-high six triples in the game. KSU got back within five points on Trisha Krewson's jumper with 5:45 left before halftime, but a seemingly innocent free throw by redshirt junior Danielle Havel opened the floodgates to a 13-0 run.
Seven of those 13 points came at the foul line, and freshman Jasmine Matthews and Slagle each hit a triple during that time. The Matthews trey came as Steffen was fouled away from the ball, and the junior split her charity tosses for a four-point possession, as Steffen had both a point and an assist on that trip down the floor. When Rogers got to the stripe and knocked down a pair of shots, BG's lead was 35-17 with 2:11 remaining before halftime.
The Flashes scored six of the last eight points to cut the deficit to 14 points, 37-23, at the intermission. In that opening half, BGSU went 9-of-15 from the free-throw line, while Kent State was 0-for-1 from the stripe.
The second half saw both teams get off to a slow start offensively. Hutcheson's jumper at the 18:51 mark was the only scoring for nearly three minutes, before Steffen took a pass from sophomore Jillian Halfhill and drained a three-pointer from the corner. On that play, Krewson was whistled for her fourth foul of the game, and Steffen completed the four-point play with 17:06 on the clock. BG's lead was 41-25.
A Hutcheson layup, however, began an 8-1 KSU run that cut the lead back to single digits. Hutcheson capped that run with a nifty bounce pass to Tamzin Barroilhet for a layup to make the score 42-33. BG quickly responded, as Halfhill fired an entry pass to Rogers for a layup with 14:14 left.
After another Hutcheson hoop, the Falcons proceeded to score the game's next nine points. Steffen split a pair of free throws, and Papenfuss took a Halfhill pass and hit one of her patented right-side bankers with 12:22 left. Then, Steffen struck twice in a 19-second span.
First, the junior hit a three-pointer that completed a five-point possession, a possession that saw the Falcons hang onto the ball for 42 seconds. Then, after a Halfhill steal gave the ball back to BG, Steffen knocked down another long-range try, for a 53-35 lead with 11:29 remaining.
The Flashes, however, whittled the lead all the way down to eight points, going on a 12-2 run. Stubbs scored the last five points during that span, including the three-pointer that cut BG's lead with 57-49 with 7:56 on the clock.
Yet another Steffen triple, though, sparked a 7-0 run that put the hosts ahead by 17 points. Havel made four-straight free throws during that time, with the fourth giving BG a 67-50 lead with 5:09 left in the game.
BG's lead reached 19 points on two Rogers tosses at the 2:46 mark, and the Falcons went ahead by a game-high 21 when junior Simone Eli drained a three-point try with 1:25 left. Schaefer's jumper closed the scoring.
Havel had seven points and six rebounds, while Papenfuss added six points and five boards. Halfhill led the Brown and Orange with four assists, and Rogers had three steals and two blocks.
Itziar Llobet scored nine points for the Flashes, adding three steals. Barroilhet had seven points, four assists and three steals on the night.
BGSU continues a three-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 7), taking on the University of Akron in a 12:00 p.m. start at the Stroh Center. The game will be televised by SportsTime Ohio and is also scheduled to be available on ESPN3.com.
