The Falcons are 1-14-1 overall, and BG is 0-7-1 in MAC play heading into Friday's Ball State match. Last Friday (Oct. 12), BGSU took a 1-0 lead over visiting Buffalo on a goal by junior Madeline Wideman, but the Bulls rallied for a pair of second-half scores en route to a 2-1 win. Falcon freshman Jenna Underwood had seven saves in goal, the highest total of her young career.
On Sunday (Oct. 14), Akron's Kelly DeNiro scored a goal in each half, giving Akron a 2-0 win over the Falcons at Cochrane Field. The loss came on Senior Day, as Becca Ison, Leah Johnson, Emily Rothwell and Sarah VonderBrink were recognized in ceremonies prior to the match. Underwood and Ison each played one half in goal for the Brown and Orange.
Sophomore Sidney Huth leads the Falcons in scoring this season, with seven points on three goals and an assist. Wideman has five points, including a pair of goals, while freshman Jessica Jarvis has two goals this fall for a total of four points. Junior Tracy Togba has scored three points, while freshman Demy Whitaker has two points on a team-leading two assists.
In goal, Underwood has made 10 starts this season, including all eight MAC matches to date. She has a total of 40 saves and a goals-against average of 1.71 in her initial season with the Falcons. Ison has made six starts this year, and has 25 saves and a 2.83 GAA.
In MAC matches, Underwood has 31 saves and a 1.55 GAA. She has played all but 45 minutes of the eight MAC contests, and has a saves percentage of .721 in league play.
Junior defender Alyssa Carmack leads the Falcons in minutes played, having been on the pitch for 1440 of the team's 1466-plus minutes this fall. Sophomore Kaylee Draper and redshirt soph Kylie Briem have played 1326 and 1288 minutes, respectively, while redshirt junior Jenny Fowler has seen a total of 1099 minutes of playing time. Sophomore Ashley Garr has played 1031 minutes this season.
With her goal on Friday vs. Buffalo, Wideman now has a career total of 19 points to lead all active Falcons. She paces all members of the 2012 team with nine career assists, and now has five goals at BGSU. Huth, who has nearly doubled her point total from last season, is tied with Wideman for the active career lead with five goals. She had four points on a pair of goals in 2011.
Ball State enters the weekend with an overall record of 7-5-4, and the Cardinals are 4-2-2 in MAC play to date. The Cards lost a 2-1 overtime decision at Toledo last Friday (Oct. 12), then snapped a two-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory at Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon. BSU's other conference wins have come against Buffalo, Akron and Eastern Michigan.
Nicole Pembleton leads a balanced offensive attack with four goals and nine points, while Jasmine Moses has three goals for six total points this fall. Eleven different players have scored at least one goal for BSU this year. In net, Aubrey Buehler has played all but 33 minutes, and has 53 saves, four shutouts and a goals-against average of just 1.01 Coach Craig Roberts welcomed back 21 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's team that went 9-9-3 overall and 4-5-2 in the MAC.
The Falcons trail Ball State, 8-3-3, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Cardinals have a three-match unbeaten streak against BGSU. Last year, the Cards scored a pair of first-half goals en route to a 2-0 win over the Falcons at Cochrane Field (Oct. 2, 2011). Two years ago, in the teams' last meeting in Muncie, the teams combined for five second-half goals in a 3-3, double-overtime draw. That match marked the fourth time in five meetings that a BGSU-Ball State game had required overtime. The Falcons are 2-4-0 in home games and 1-4-3 in road contests vs. the Cards.
Series information and match-by-match results for all of BGSU's opponents can be found on pages 45-47 of the BGSU Women's Soccer Media Guide, which is available on the web here at BGSUFalcons.com.
Miami will enter the weekend with an overall record of 14-2-0, and the RedHawks are a perfect 8-0-0 in the MAC heading into a Friday showdown. MU, atop the MAC's East Division, plays at West-leading Central Michigan before hosting the Brown and Orange two days later. Last weekend, the RedHawks posted a pair of one-goal wins on the road, with a 3-2 victory at NIU and a 1-0 triumph at UT. MU has won nine consecutive matches and 12 of the last 13 contests.
The RedHawks are fifth in the nation in scoring offense as a team, and Miami has five players ranked in the top 100 in the nation in total points. Kelsey Dinges leads that list with 10 goals and 23 points, while Jess Kodiak also has 23 points, on eight goals and seven assists. Kayla Zakrzewski (21 points), Katy Dolesh (19 pts.) and Haley Walter (19 pts.) each have at least five goals and five assists apiece in 2012. In goal, Allison Norenberg has six shutouts, 44 saves and a GAA of just 0.89. Head coach Bobby Kramig has 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, back from the 2011 club that went 9-8-1 overall and 4-6-1 in MAC action.
The Falcons trail Miami, 10-7-1, in that series, and the RedHawks have a three-game unbeaten streak against the Brown and Orange. Last season's meeting saw the teams battle to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in Oxford (Oct. 27, 2011) in the final game of the season for both clubs. Miami won the first eight series meetings, and BGSU then won seven-straight games over the RedHawks, prior to Miami wins in 2009 and '10 and the tie last year. The Falcons are 4-4-0 in home matches, 3-5-1 in road contests and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches against Miami.
NOTE: Sunday's (Oct. 14) Ohio-Western Michigan game was ruled a no contest, due to unplayable field conditions, and the game will not be made up. The MAC will be following the 'lost' game procedure for the remainder of the regular season. The order of standings and seeding for the MAC Tournament will be determined by dividing a team's total number of points earned (3 points for a win, 1 for a tie) by the number of games played. The current points-per-game averages are: Miami 3.00; Central Michigan 2.625; Kent State 2.00; Eastern Michigan 1.875; Ball State 1.75; Toledo 1.625; Northern Illinois 1.00; Ohio 1.00; Buffalo 0.875; Western Michigan 0.857; Akron 0.375; Bowling Green 0.125.
Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will return home for the final match of the regular season. BGSU will meet Central Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 25, in a 3:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field.
