Bowling Green, Ohio – Detroit's Ray McCallum is the point guard who garners all the national headlines. But Bowling Green's Jordon Crawford was the point guard who scored a career-high 26 points and led his Falcons to a 70-65 win over McCallum's Detroit Titans' squad Tuesday night at the Stroh Center.
Crawford knocked down a career-best five three-pointers, made a pair of clutch free-throws late, and helped Bowling Green get back to .500 on the season with a victory over one of the favorites to win the Horizon League. But Crawford also got plenty of help as Bowling Green won two in a row for the first time in the early stages of the 2012-13 season.
All 10 players who saw action scored for Bowling Green and the Falcon defense was stout, holding Detroit to just 38 percent shooting and only 29 percent in the first half. The Falcons trailed just once in the contest, briefly falling behind by one point in the second half. But Crawford answered with a four-point play on the next possession and Bowling Green never fell behind again.
The Falcons jumped out quickly, scoring the first four points on a lay-up from Chauncey Orr and a jumper from Cam Black. Bowling Green continued to build the lead throughout the first half, taking a double-digit lead after an Anthony Henderson three-pointer and a Richaun Holmes dunk made it 24-13 with 9:20 to go. An A'uston Calhoun lay-up with 4:00 left gave the Falcons their largest lead of the contest at 33-19, but Detroit rallied back.
The Titans closed the half on an 11-1 run, turning Bowling Green over and getting easy transition dunks. McCallum had seven points during the stretch and Doug Anderson forced a turnover and got a dunk as time expired to bring Detroit within four at the break at 34-30.
Detroit opened the second half with a lay-up, but Crawford and Luke Kraus hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead back to eight at 40-32. However, Detroit scored the next nine points, capped by a McCallum dunk that put the Titans ahead 41-40. That's when Crawford answered with a three-pointer at the top of the key 23 seconds later as he was knocked to the ground. The diminutive 5-foot-6 point guard made the free-throw to give the Falcons a three-point lead.
The Titans continued to hang close and a Juwan Howard Jr. jumper with 5:27 left brought Detroit back within one. Crawford, though, answered again with a three-pointer to push the lead back to four. From there, Bowling Green went 9-of-10 from the line down the stretch and the Falcons forced Detroit to miss its next six shot attempts to pull away at the end.
For the game, Bowling Green shot 46 percent from the floor and made 9-of-22 three-pointers. The Falcons were 17-of-22 at the free-throw line and committed just one second-half turnover after nine in the opening 20 minutes.
Calhoun ended with nine points and five rebounds, while Orr had eight points and a team-high seven boards. Black scored just four points, but had three rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. Jehvon Clarke came off the bench to score seven points and hand out a team-high three assists, while Holmes had five points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Detroit falls to 2-3 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 3-3. The Falcons will play its second home game in a five-game home stretch Saturday against Youngstown State at 2 p.m.
