Muncie, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University swim team suffered its second loss to a Mid-American Conference opponent on Saturday, as the Falcons fell to Ball State, 176.5-117.5, in their second road meet in as many days. Bowling Green fell to Miami Friday night by a score of 173-113.
The Falcons' distance swimmers performed well, with Emily Waller and Erica Nieminen touching first in one event each. Waller started things off with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, posting a time of 10:36.86, with Nieminen not far behind in third. Nieminen came back in the 500-yard freestyle to earn her first individual win of the year, touching in 5:10.68. Waller finished second with a mark of 5:12.08.
Joëlle Scheps, the winner of two races against Miami on Friday, again came through for the Falcons, placing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.75). Scheps went on to place second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.74, behind Ball State's Haley Richter. Richter led the Cardinals, winning three individual races and also swimming in a winning relay for her team.
"The team responded well to the challenging weekend and we are confident that we are becoming stronger," said head coach Petra Martin. "We are learning how to deal with adversity and how to stick together no matter what. We did lose but we have prepared ourselves better for February. We believe in the work we are putting in every day - learning what we can do better, appreciating what we are good at and moving on to the next competition."
Senior Emily Bennet claimed Bowling Green's only other individual event win of the day, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle. Bennet finished with a time of 52.67, narrowly beating Ball State's Carlena Magley (52.76). BGSU's Brittany Szekely finished third, posting a season-best time of 53.07. Szekely also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.24), nearly overtaking Magley (24.21).
Alexis Kain and Alexa Harris earned a trio of second-place finishes, with Kain placing second to Ball State's Bridgette Ruehl in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.13-1:05.52) and Harris falling to BSU's Katelyn Pratt in both the 100-yard backstroke (58.25-59.13) and the 200-yard back (2:06.66-2:06.90). The Falcons' 200-yard medley relay team also finished second to start the meet. That team consisted of Hannah Newman, Kain, Szekely and Bennet.
The Falcons return to action Nov. 16-18 with a trip to Chicago to compete in the Northwestern TYR Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University.
