QUICK HITS
• The Falcons, after starting the year with a 3-3 record, have won three consecutive games, including a 60-37 win at Northwestern on Sunday (Dec. 9) ... BGSU has captured each of those games by at least 20 points, and the Falcon defense has allowed an average of just 44.3 points per game in those three contests.
• In those three games – wins over Colorado State and Butler at home, along with the victory at Northwestern – the Falcons allowed the opponents to shoot just 32.7% from the field, and BG forced an average of 18.0 turnovers per game.
• BGSU held two consecutive opponents under 50 points, defeating Colorado State, 71-49 (Dec. 1), and Butler, 67-47 (Dec. 5), before allowing only 37 points at Northwestern ... the Falcons held the Wildcats off the scoreboard for over 10 minutes to start the game, and allowed NU to make only four field goals in the first half.
• The Falcons' defensive showing against NU, in terms of points allowed, was the team's best in nearly five years ... BG had not held an opponent to 37 points or fewer since a 78-36 win over UT Martin on Dec. 30, 2007 ... that win came in the Cyclone Shootout in Ames, Iowa.
• BGSU has held three-straight opponents under 50 points for the first time in more than three decades ... the last such instance came when head coach Kathy Bole's Falcons held Adrian, Taylor and Lewis under the 50-point mark during a two-day span (Dec. 4-5, 1981).
• Redshirt junior Alexis Rogers scored a game-high 25 points in the Falcons' win at Northwestern ... Rogers scored nine of the game's first 10 points, and outscored the entire NU team in the first half, with 16 points before the break ... BG had a 28-15 halftime advantage.
• In fact, when Rogers hit a three-pointer to give her those 16 points with just over four minutes remaining in the first half, she was singlehandedly outscoring all of the other players on both teams combined ... that shot gave BGSU a 23-8 lead.
• Rogers had a career-high seven steals against NU, just three away from the school record ... additionally, she also set a career best by making three three-point field goals.
• Senior Chrissy Steffen joined Rogers in double figures, with 14 points vs. the Wildcats ... Rogers and Steffen (39 points) combined to outscore the entire Northwestern team on the afternoon.
• The Falcons scored the first 11 points of the game at NU's Welsh-Ryan Arena, marking the second time in three games that BGSU began the game with a double-digit scoring run ... BG had scored the first 15 points of the Colorado State game.
• Additionally, both CSU and NU made just four first-half field goals vs. the Falcons ... the Rams shot just 21.1% (4-for-19) against BG at the Stroh Center, while the 'Cats shot 22.2% (4-of-18) in Evanston on Sunday.
ROOS = SUCCESS
• BGSU began the regular-season schedule with a 68-57 win over Madonna, the first official victory of the Jennifer Roos Era ... Roos, hired as the Falcons' head coach on April 16, 2012, has guided BGSU to a 6-3 record to date.
• Roos, of course, has been on the BGSU staff for over a decade, having been Curt Miller's first hire when he took the job in 2001 ... Roos spent three seasons as an assistant coach, and served as Miller's associate head coach for the last eight years ... BGSU captured Mid-American Conference divisional titles in each of those eight years, winning the MAC regular-season title outright in seven of those seasons.
• BGSU has gone 264-95 overall and 135-41 in MAC play since Roos arrived at BG ... those numbers represent a success rate of nearly 74 percent overall and a winning percentage of almost 77% in conference action.
• Over the last nine-plus years, the numbers are even more staggering ... the Falcons are 243-60 (80.2%) overall, 124-20 (86.1%) in MAC regular-season play and 145-24 (85.7%) in all games vs. league foes during that time ... BGSU has won more than 20 games in each of the last nine seasons, a MAC record.
• Although the Madonna game marked the 'official' head-coaching debut for Roos, as well as her first 'official' win, it was not her first regular-season contest in charge of the Falcons ... when Miller suffered a mild stroke in January of 2012, Roos assumed interim head-coaching duties and led BGSU to a 2-0 record, with wins on the road against Central Michigan and at home vs. Northern Illinois prior to Miller's return to the bench in early February.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons enter the Wyoming game with a record of 6-3 on the season ... BGSU opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 68-57 win over Madonna at the Stroh Center (Nov. 10), then hit the road and posted a 79-74 victory at Niagara (Nov. 15) ... BG then suffered back-to-back losses at Purdue (45-59; Nov. 19) and against Villanova, with the latter setback coming by a 53-42 score in Las Vegas (Nov. 24).
• The Brown and Orange bounced back with a 64-54 win over host UNLV (Nov. 25), before falling to Temple, 70-56, at the Stroh (Nov. 28) ... again, though, after losing to a Philadelphia Big Five school, the Falcons responded with a win over a Mountain West Conference foe ... BG topped Colorado State, 71-49, at the Stroh (Dec. 1), then downed visiting Butler by a 67-47 score (Dec. 5) ... last weekend (Dec. 9), the Falcons beat Northwestern, 60-37, on the road.
• The Falcons are 3-1 at home, 3-1 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site games this season to date ... BGSU has a scoring margin of +5.8, and the Falcons lead the MAC in rebounding margin, at +6.3.
• Individually, senior Chrissy Steffen paces a balanced Falcon scoring attack, with 11.0 points per game to date ... Steffen also averages 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest, and she leads the Brown and Orange with 15 successful three-point field goals this season.
• Steffen is one of eight Falcons averaging at least 4.3 points per game this year ... additionally, five of those eight players have averaged 4.0 or more rebounds.
• Junior Jillian Halfhill and redshirt junior Alexis Rogers have 8.9 and 8.3 ppg, respectively ... Halfhill has 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest, ranking second on the team in helpers and third in boards ... Rogers has 5.3 rpg, good for second on the Falcons, and she leads BGSU in steals (1.6 spg).
• Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel has 8.2 ppg, and leads the Falcons in a multitude of categories, including rebounds (5.9 rpg) and assists (2.6 apg) ... Havel is tied for the BG lead in blocked shots, and paces the Falcons in field-goal percentage (44.6%), three-point FG pct. (36.8%) and free-throw pct. (81.0%) ... she has two double-doubles on the young season, tops among Falcon players.
• Sophomore Jasmine Matthews has 5.6 ppg, while freshman Miriam Justinger averages 5.2 ppg ... Matthews is second on the Falcons with 1.3 three-pointers made per game ... Justinger is 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point land and 20-of-25 (80.0%) from the free-throw line this year to date, and leads the Falcons in FTM.
• Senior Allison Papenfuss and junior Jill Stein have 4.6 and 4.3 rpg, respectively ... Stein has 4.2 rebounds per contest, while Papenfuss has 3.8 rpg ... freshman Bailey Cairnduff averages 3.9 points per outing, and has made seven three-pointers this season to tie for fourth on the Falcons.
• Junior Katrina Salinas is averaging 2.3 ppg in her first season at BGSU, while sophomore Deborah Hoekstra has played in five games and is averaging 1.0 ppg.
• Halfhill, Havel and Steffen each have started all nine games to date, while Rogers has made eight starts ... Cairnduff started the first four games of the season, while Matthews has been in the starting lineup in each of the last five contests.
• Head coach Jennifer Roos welcomed back nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a year ago ... the Brown and Orange went 24-7 overall and 14-2 in the MAC in 2011-12.
• The Falcons are shooting .370 from the field, and BG is .316 from three-point range and .696 from the free-throw line through the first nine games ... the opponents have shot .390 from the floor, .261 from beyond the arc and .685 from the stripe.
STEFFEN EYES 1,000-POINT MARK
Senior Chrissy Steffen's 14-point game at Northwestern moved her over the 950-point mark for her career ... Steffen now has a total of 952 points in 104 career games at BGSU ... the Carmel, Ind., native is looking to become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
A QUICK LOOK AT WYOMING
Wyoming has a record of 7-1 on the season, heading into a Friday (Dec. 14) home game against Weber State ... the Cowgirls are 3-0 at home, 3-1 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site matches to date ... UW won four games to begin the season, before falling at Colorado, 68-59, on Nov. 28 ... the Cowgirls have bounced back, however, with three-straight wins, including a 73-50 home victory over Eastern Michigan and road wins over Montana and Montana State ... the team's balanced attack sees four players averaging at least 12.3 points per game ... senior forward Chaundra Sewell leads the way with 13.9 ppg, and she is averaging a double-double, with a team-high 10.0 rebounds per outing ... senior forward Ashley Sickles and sophomore guard Kaitlyn Mileto have 12.8 and 12.5 ppg, respectively, with sophomore forward Kayla Woodward averaging 12.3 ppg ... that quartet has started all eight games to date for head coach Joe Legerski, as has sophomore Alison Gorrell (4.6 ppg, a team-leading 3.3 assists per game) ... Legerski welcomed back all 10 letterwinners, including all five starters, from the 2011-12 team ... last year, the Cowgirls went 12-17 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West Conference play.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads Wyoming, 1-0, in the all-time series between the schools ... the only prior meeting came last season in Laramie, as the Falcons pulled out a 60-53 win (Dec. 29, 2011) ... BG took the lead with a late first-half run, and the Falcons held off every UW challenge down the stretch ... Jessica Slagle scored a then career-high 16 points, while Chrissy Steffen had 15.
HONORARY MEMBERS OF THE MOUNTAIN WEST?
• Sunday's opponent, Wyoming, is the third Mountain West Conference opponent the Falcons face in a span of three weeks ... the Falcons posted a win at UNLV (64-54; Nov. 25) along with a home victory over Colorado State (71-49; Dec. 5).
• In addition to the three MWC foes, the Falcons' non-conference schedule includes four foes from the Atlantic 10 Conference (Temple, Butler, Massachusetts and Dayton); two Big Ten Conference opponents (Purdue and Northwestern); and one each from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Niagara), Big East Conference (Villanova) and Conference USA (UCF) ... BGSU also faced one school (Madonna) from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of the NAIA ... all of this, of course, is assuming none of these schools have changed conferences since these notes were completed.
A BALANCED BG ATTACK
• A total of 11 players have seen action for the Falcons this season to date ... no fewer than nine of those players have posted a double-digit scoring total at least once in 2012-13 ... that list includes seniors Danielle Havel, Allison Papenfuss and Chrissy Steffen, juniors Jillian Halfhill, Alexis Rogers and Jill Stein, sophomore Jasmine Matthews and freshmen Bailey Cairnduff and Miriam Justinger.
• BGSU seems to be getting point production from a different player or players each time out ... seven different Falcons led the team in scoring in as many games at the start of the season ... Halfhill, Havel, Matthews, Papenfuss and Steffen (not necessarily in that order) each paced the Falcons in the scoring column once over the first five games ... then, Rogers shared team scoring honors with Steffen against Temple, and Justinger led the way vs. Colorado State ... the Butler game saw Justinger and Havel tie for the BG scoring lead, and Rogers exploded for 25 points at Northwestern.
STROH'ME-COURT ADVANTAGE
• The Falcons have enjoyed a long-standing tradition of success at home ... most of that success came at venerable Anderson Arena, where the Brown and Orange enjoyed an outstanding home-court advantage over the years ... but, BGSU appears to be beginning a new tradition of success at the Stroh Center.
• BGSU has a record of 17-3 in the new building since it opened prior to last season ... after losing by just one point to nationally-ranked Purdue in last year's home opener, the Falcons reeled off 14-straight wins at the Stroh, before losing another one-point game to VCU in the WNIT ... BG suffered a 70-56 loss to visiting Temple (Nov. 28), the first double-digit loss in the building, but the Falcons have bounced back with a pair of wins by at least 20 points, over Colorado State and Butler.
• The 17-3 mark at the Stroh comes after the Falcons went 333-116 (74.2%) in Anderson Arena during the team's tenure there ... the record was even better during MAC play, as the Falcons had a league mark of 192-54 (78.0%) at "The House That Roars" through the years.
ANDERSON + STROH = SUCCESS
• BGSU ended the Anderson Arena Era on a pretty good run, to say the least ... the Falcons won 46 of the final 48 games played in "The House That Roars" ... BGSU saw a 23-game home winning streak snapped with a one-point loss to Toledo (Jan. 26, 2011), then won the final four games in the building by an average of 18.5 ppg.
• The Falcons' only other loss in the final 48 contests in the old barn came at the hands of Indiana in the third round of the 2009 WNIT ... BG had won 19-straight home games before losing to IU, then starting the 23-game home streak ... 41 of the Falcons' 46 wins in that overall span came by double digits.
• When combining the Anderson Arena Era with the inaugural year-plus of the Stroh Center, the Falcons have won 63 of the last 68 home games ... 56 of those 63 victories, including 15 of the 17 wins at the Stroh, have come by double-digit margins.
THEY'RE FREE, YOU KNOW
If the first nine games are any indication, the 2012-13 Falcons are continuing an impressive program trend of getting to the line waaaaay more often than the other team ... BGSU has made a total of 117 free throws this season to date ... that total is just seven fewer than the opponents have attempted ... BG has made more tosses than the foes have attempted in three of the last four years ... and, the Falcons' total of free throws made has been at least 100 higher than the opponents' FTM total in each of the last seven seasons ... the 2002-03 season was the last time the opposition made, or attempted, more free throws than BG.
THE CAPTAINS
Fifth-year senior Danielle Havel, senior Chrissy Steffen and junior Jill Stein are the tri-captains of the 2012-13 Falcons ... Havel and Steffen each are captains for the second consecutive year ... the three were selected in a vote of team members as well as the coaching staff.
UP NEXT
Following the Wyoming game, the Falcons will prepare for a Wednesday (Dec. 19) game at Massachusetts ... the UMASS game will be BGSU's final competition before the Christmas holiday, and also will be the Falcons' last road trip for nearly a month ... after a break for the holidays, the Falcons will begin a season-long five-game homestand against nationally-ranked Dayton on Sunday, Dec. 30, at the Stroh Center.
