With the victory, BGSU improves to 5-3 on the season, while dropping BU to 3-5.
The Falcons made six-of-seven field-goal attempts to start the second period, extending a four-point halftime lead to a double-digit margin, and BG never looked back.
The Falcons' balanced scoring attack included 12 points from both senior Danielle Havel and freshman Miriam Justinger, while senior Allison Papenfuss and sophomore Jasmine Matthews added 10 points apiece. Junior Jill Stein had nine points for the Brown and Orange.
Havel had a double-double, with a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with those 12 points, and she also had a game-high five assists.
Papenfuss and Stein combined to make 9-of-13 shots, helping the Falcons to a whopping 34-7 advantage in bench scoring on the night. For the game, the Brown and Orange shot a season-high 45.8 percent from the field.
Taylor Schippers led the Bulldogs with 12 points and four assists, while Hannah Douglas scored 11 points.
As mentioned, the Falcons made 6-of-7 shots to begin the second period. And, the one miss during that stretch was followed by a Papenfuss offensive rebound and layup. That basket was part of six Papenfuss points during an 11-0 BGSU run. When the smoke had cleared, the Brown and Orange had a 47-31 lead with just over 13 minutes left.
The Falcons shot 55.6 percent in the second half, making 15-of-27 shots after the intermission. BGSU outscored Butler, 38-22, over the final 20 minutes.
It was the visitors, however, taking an early lead at the Stroh Center. Schippers hit a three-pointer, and Amanda Raker's back-door layup gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead and prompted BGSU coach Jennifer Roos to take a timeout.
Havel hit a three-pointer out of that timeout, but Schippers answered with a jumper in the paint. The Falcons twice hit buckets to cut BU's lead to two points, as senior Chrissy Steffen and Stein each converted layups. Each time, though, the visitors responded with a bucket to restore a four-point advantage.
Havel hit a pair of free throws with nine minutes elapsed, and Justinger split a pair of defenders for a driving layup that tied the game, 11-11. Douglas gave the Bulldogs the lead once again, but Havel made the 'extra pass' to a wide-open Matthews, who knocked down a three-point try from the left wing. The Falcons led for the first time, 14-13.
Moments later, junior Jillian Halfhill saw the lane open up in front of her, and the point guard drove to the hoop and laid the ball off glass and in. But, Schippers drained a long three-point try, tying the game at 16-all.
Daress McClung's layup put the visitors in front, and she then hit a three-pointer for a 21-16 Butler advantage. The Falcons, though, would respond with an 8-0 run.
First, Matthews dribbled around the top of the arc and hit a long two-pointer at the 4:08 mark. Then, after a steal by junior Alexis Rogers, Justinger executed a perfect shot fake, drove and hit a nifty floater over a BU defender, bringing the Falcons within a point. A Justinger steal led to an easy layup, as Havel ran the floor and beat everyone else to the hoop, and the home team led for good.
Havel converted another layup, and a Stein basket gave the Brown and Orange a 26-21 lead with 1:11 left before halftime. Douglas snapped the Falcons' run with a jumper, but Stein took a Matthews pass and banked home a three-pointer. The triple was the second of Stein's career, and her second in as many games, and it gave the Falcons a 29-23 advantage as BU took time with 34.0 seconds left.
That hoop preceded a strange sequence of events as the half neared its conclusion. After that timeout, Butler took a shot late in the shot clock. A three-point try by Schippers appeared to miss everything, and McClung came up with the rebound. The shot-clock horn sounded, and a referee's whistle also sounded, as McClung attempted a shot.
With 3.4 seconds remaining in the half and the BG bench calling for a shot-clock violation, a foul was called on Stein. The foul, Stein's third of the game, sent McClung to the line where she made a pair of tosses to cut the Falcons' lead to four points at the intermission.
Havel had nine first-half points, while Stein scored seven for the hosts.
In the second half, Steffen's driving one-hander began BG's 5-for-6 shooting stretch, and Stein answered a Raker free throw by backing down her defender and finishing down low.
McClung scored to cut the BG lead to five points, but Matthews fed Havel for a driving layup. Several minutes later, Havel returned the favor, finding Matthews on the left wing for a triple and a 39-31 advantage.
Papenfuss, scoreless in the game to that point, then began to impose her will. She grabbed a teammate's miss and hit a layup to give BG a double-digit lead for the first time. The BG defense forced BU into a shot-clock violation, and Halfhill knocked down a driving layup.
Papenfuss scored back-to-back buckets, putting back her own missed shots, then draining a jumper to conclude BGSU's 11-0 run. With 13:20 left, the Falcons had a 47-31 lead.
The Bulldogs scored the next three points, but Steffen threw an entry pass to Papenfuss for a jump-stop layup off the square. Then, after a Justinger steal, Steffen spotted the freshman in front of the BGSU bench, and Justinger's corner three gave the Falcons a 52-34 lead with 11:22 remaining.
Butler got as close as 14 points after Blaire Langlois hit a trey with 5:26 on the clock, but freshman Bailey Cairnduff found Papenfuss ahead of the pack for a layup. Then, Justinger came up with a steal, ran the floor and took a return pass from Halfhill for another BGSU transition layup and a 59-41 advantage.
Raker's three-point play cut the lead to 15 points with just over four minutes to go, but Havel kicked the ball out to Justinger for a three-pointer, and a Matthews jumper extended the lead to 20 points for the first time. Three free throws by junior Katrina Salinas, sandwiched around a Schippers triple, concluded the scoring.
As mentioned, the Falcons shot 45.8% for the game, and BG held Butler to a 33.3% success rate from the floor.
For the second-straight game, the BGSU bench players outscored the starters by one point. The Falcon bench scored 34 points, while BG's starters had 33 points on the evening.
Also for the second consecutive contest, the Falcons outrebounded the opponent by a double-digit margin. BGSU had a 42-31 advantage on the boards.
Havel's double-double was her second of the season and the third of her career. Justinger, with 12 points, matched her career scoring high, which she set in BGSU's last game.
For the visitors, McClung scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, while Raker had eight points.
The Falcons now prepare for a trip to Chicagoland. BGSU will face Northwestern University on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 9), before taking a break for fall semester exams. The Falcons' next home game is Sunday, Dec. 16, against Wyoming.
