AUBURN, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Alabama State 6-0 Saturday afternoon, behind the stellar pitching performance of freshman Paris Imholz. The Hornets only managed one hit in the contest, as Imholz recorded two strikeouts on the day, and didn't allow a walk in seven innings of work.
The Falcons jumped on the board quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After junior Hannah Fulk earned a lead-off walk, senior Rachel Proehl reached first on a bunt single, moving Fulk to second base. Junior Paige Berger grounded out to first, but moved both runners over, before an Alabama State error in the next at bat allowed both Fulk and Proehl to reach home.
Bowling Green had their best offensive production in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Proehl led the inning off with a double, before moving over to third base on a Berger single in the second at bat of the frame. Junior Andrea Arney brought home Proehl on a single to left field, before a throwing error on the Hornets allowed Berger to score another Falcon run. Another Alabama State error eventually led to two more Bowling Green runs in the inning, pushing the score to 6-0.
The six run lead was more than enough for Imholz, who shut down the Hornets' lineup for the remainder of the day, securing the 6-0 win for the Falcons.
"Today was an important day for us as a team," said head coach Shannon Salsburg. "We wanted to come out strong and take care of the ball. Paris did an outstanding job in the circle and the defense was solid. Offensively we found ways to manufacture runs when we needed them. This was a great team win."
The 6-0 win marks the Falcons first shutout of the young season, and their first since last year, when they blanked Detroit 14-0 (April. 20).
Berger and Fulk extended their three-game hit streaks in Saturday's win, as both have secured at least one hit in every game so far this season.
Bowling Green is now 2-1 on the year, and is back in action tomorrow against IPFW in the final game of the Tiger Invitation Tournament.
