BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team lost a close game with Indiana State Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in the first game of the Hilltopper Spring Classic. Junior Paige Berger went 2-for-4 on the day, while freshman pitcher Jamie Kertes allowed two earned runs and recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Falcons opened the Hilltopper Classic on a strong note, earning two runs in the first inning of play. Junior Hannah Fulk walked to start the inning, before Berger belted her second home run of the young season, bringing home two early runs for the Falcons.
Indiana State responded with four straight runs, recording a run in the second, third, fourth and seventh inning respectively.
Bowling Green would add a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, pulling the score to 4-3, but the Falcons were unable to tie the contest, eventually falling to the Sycamores 4-3. The loss drops the Falcons to 2-2 on the season.
“Today was a tough loss,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “We didn't control the things we could, and they capitalized on our mistakes. We are looking forward to coming back tonight.”
Berger's home run marked the 25th of her career, pulling her ever closer to second on the all time list.
Fulk and Proehl each extended their four-game hitting streak, as both have collected a hit in every game this season.
The Falcons play their second game of the Hilltopper Classic Saturday night, as they face off against host school Western Kentucky at 6 p.m.
