With the win, the Bobcats improve to 13-15 overall and 6-8 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 22-5 and 12-2, respectively.
With the loss, BGSU drops into a tie for the overall MAC lead with Eastern Michigan. The Eagles are also 12-2 in the league after a 54-33 win over Toledo Tuesday night (Feb. 21). UT has an 11-3 league record.
In the East Division race, BG is two games ahead of second-place Miami (10-4 MAC) with two regular-season games remaining.
Benson had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bobcats, while Shavon Robinson had 20 points on the night.
The loss overshadowed a monster game by BGSU redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers, who led all players with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Rogers' rebounding total was a career high, and she had 12 of BGSU's 24 second-half points.
Wednesday's setback marked BGSU's first loss in Athens in a decade. BGSU had won seven consecutive games at 'The Convo' since a 74-68 Ohio win in the first round of the 2002 MAC Tournament, BGSU coach Curt Miller's first year at the helm.
The Falcons led by as many as 12 points late in the first half, putting together a 15-0 run to take a 30-18 lead. But, the 'Cats scored the final seven points of the half to go into the lockerroom trailing by a 32-27 score.
Buckets by Rogers on each of the Falcons' two second-half possessions gave the Brown and Orange a nine-point lead, and the Falcons still led by eight at the first media timeout of the period. But, the hosts then went on an 11-2 run to take a 43-42 lead on a Benson putback with 8:22 left.
The lead changed hands several times over the next few minutes, before a Benson hoop gave the Bobcats a 52-51 lead with 2;08 remaining. A shot-clock violation on BG's next possession gave the ball back to the hosts, and Benson scored inside with 1:25 left in the game.
But, senior Jessica Slagle found freshman Jasmine Matthews for a three-pointer from the right elbow, tying the score at 54-54 with just over a minute left.
Back came Benson, as the senior worked inside for a short jumper with 47.2 seconds remaining. At the other end, however, Ohio's Symone Lyles was called for her fifth foul of the game with 33.3 seconds left. Rogers hit both ends of a one-and-one opportunity to tie the score. Ohio brought the ball over midcourt and called a timeout with 28.9 seconds on the clock.
Out of the timeout, Benson dribbled the ball out top until approximately 12 seconds remained, then drove and hit an 'and-one- layup with 8.1 seconds on the clock, giving Ohio a 58-56 lead.
Benson missed the ensuing free throw, but on the rebound, she went to the floor to tie up a BGSU player for a jump ball, and the possession arrow pointed in the Bobcats' direction with 6.8 seconds remaining.
The Falcons' committed a foul before Ohio inbounded the ball, sending Robinson to the line. She made both free throws for a four-point lead, and a last-second BGSU shot was off the mark.
The Bobcats shot 45.4 percent for the game, while BGSU had a 38.2% field-goal rate. After going 13-of-27 (48.1%) in the first half, the Falcons made just eight of 28 field-goal tries (28.6%) in the final 20 minutes.
Led by Rogers, the Falcons had a 37-32 rebounding advantage. But, the Falcons committed 18 turnovers on the night. Ohio turned the ball over 15 times, and the Bobcats had a 17-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Bobcats took a 7-2 lead out of the gate, before a three-pointer by junior Chrissy Steffen cut Ohio's advantage to two points at the first media timeout. A jumper by redshirt junior Danielle Havel tied the score, but the hosts responded with five-straight points, with a Robinson three-point play giving the 'Cats a 12-7 lead.
Rogers hit a straightaway trey, but layups by Benson and Alesia Howard gave the hosts a 16-10 lead. Matthews knocked down a three-pointer, and a Slagle jumper cut the Falcons' deficit to a single point.
Tina Fisher's layup at the 9:19 mark put Ohio ahead by an 18-15 count, but the Bobcats would not score again for more than six minutes. A Rogers triple tied the score and began the Falcons' 15-0 run.
Slagle's nifty under-the-basket layup gave BG the lead for the first time in the game, and Rogers fed Havel for a layup and a 22-18 advantage, prompting an Ohio timeout.
Matthews drove and hit a banker, and Rogers threw in a shot in the lane in the shot-clock buzzer for a 26-18 lead. Slagle dribbled around and hit a jumper in the paint, and Rogers blew by her would-be defender for a layup and a 30-18 advantage, as the Bobcats used another timeout.
Finally, with 2:59 on the clock, Robinson broke Ohio's scoring drought with a jumper, but sophomore Jillian Halfhill was fouled shooting a three-pointer. She hit the first two tosses for a 32-20 lead with 2:29 left.
The 'Cats, however, ended the half on a 7-0 run. Back-to-back hoops by Robinson were followed by a Benson three-point play, and BG led by just five points at the break.
Rogers scored on each of BG's first two second-half possessions, for a nine-point lead, but Ohio rallied once again. Benson put back her own miss to cap a 5-0 run and cut her team's deficit to just four points.
Rogers hit a layup, then scored again on a tough turnaround shot after a bevy of post moves. BGSU's lead was eight points, 40-32, with 16:20 left. But, another five-point run by the Bobcats, capped by Mariah Byard's three-pointer, cut the Falcons' lead to just three points with 13:33 left.
Slagle knocked down a pair of free throws, but the 'Cats scored the next six points, including a pair of hoops by Robinson. A putback by Benson gave the hosts a 43-42 lead with 8:22 remaining.
Matthews responded with a triple at the 6:43 mark. That shot was the first second-half basket by a BG player other than Rogers. Two Robinson free throws tied the score, but Steffen slipped inside to get an offensive rebound and lay the ball back up and in for a 47-45 lead at the 6:02 mark.
Erin Bailes, however, responded by hitting a triple for the hosts, but Havel scored off of a Slagle inbounds pass, giving the Falcons a 49-48 lead with just over five minutes left.
Rogers got an offensive rebound, was fouled and hit both charity tosses for a three-point lead, but Lyles knocked down a short-corner jumper with four minutes left. That was the final scoring until Benson's layup at the 2:08 mark.
Matthews had 11 points in the game, including a game-high three three-pointers, to join Rogers in double figures for the Falcons. Slagle had eight points and a game-high six assists, tying her career best in the latter category.
BGSU returns home to face Miami on Saturday (Feb. 25) in a 1:00 p.m. start at the Stroh Center. The game will be 'Senior Day' for the program, as Slagle and Maribeth Giese will be recognized in festivities prior to the game.
