BOXSCORE
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Western Kentucky Saturday night, falling 5-1 to the host Hilltoppers in the second game of the Hilltopper Spring Classic.
The bats were dormant for both squads in the first two innings, as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard.
The first run of the game came in the top of third inning, when WKU freshman Shawna Sadler hit a solo homerun to give the Hilltoppers the 1-0 lead.
Western Kentucky turned on the offense in the sixth, recording four runs on four hits in the inning, pushing the Hilltopper lead to 5-0.
The Falcons scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning, thanks to a solo home run from junior Andrea Arney. The home run marked Arney's first of the season, and fifth of her career.
“Today one inning was the difference in both games,” said head coach Shannon Salsburg. “We talked as a team about shutting down the big innings. We look forward to playing all 7 innings tomorrow the way we played 6 today."
Freshman pitcher Paris Imholz was credited with the loss, recording three strikeouts, and allowing one earned run in 5.2 innings of work. The loss is Imholz's first of the season, and first of her career.
Sophomore Katie Yoho collected a team-high two hits, while Arney recorded the lone RBI.
Saturday's 5-1 loss marks the lowest run output of the young season for Bowling Green. The Falcons are currently averaging five runs-per-game.
Saturday's 5-1 loss also marked the end of junior Paige Berger's four-game hitting streak. Berger had previously registered two hits or more in every game this season.
Junior Hanna Fulk extended her hitting streak to five games in the 5-1 loss, as she is the only Falcon left with a hit in every game this season.
Bowling Green (2-3) is back in action Sunday morning, taking on the Eagles of Morehead State at 10 a.m.
