With the win, the Falcons of head coach Penny Dean improve to 6-5 in dual matches this season. The Bulls drop to 7-7 overall, and UB is now 1-2 in MAC action.
The Brown and Orange captured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The Falcons' third-flight duo of juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson picked up the Falcons' first win of the day for the second consecutive match. Hill and Johnson, teaming up for the fourth time in their BGSU careers but the third time in the last four matches, opened up a 7-1 lead en route to an 8-2 win over UB's Kira Golenko and Anamaria Candanoza.
BGSU's two sophomores, Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, also got out to an early lead and were never headed. Chiricosta and Reuland won four of the first five games on the way to an 8-3 victory against Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas.
With the win, the Chiricosta/Reuland team improves to 3-0 this season and 11-5 in their respective BGSU tenures.
At the second flight, the Bulls' duo of Marta Stoyanova and Tamara Markovic took a 5-3 lead against Katie Grubb and Maddy Eccleston. The BG juniors, however, came roaring back, winning five-straight games to capture the match. The Eccleston/Grubb duo, like Hill and Johnson, were playing together for just the third time this season. Eccleston and Grubb are now 3-0 as a team, both this season and in their BG careers.
The Falcons' doubles success carried over to singles play, as the Brown and Orange won three of the first four contests to clinch the match.
Grubb was the first BG player to finish in singles play. She surged to an early lead in her opening set against Podlas, capturing a 6-2 decision. As was the case in doubles, Grubb ended her singles match with a comeback. She lost the first three games of the second set, then proceeded to win six-straight games to capture the set and the fifth-flight match.
UB's Shah closed out a victory over Eccleston at the number-one flight to get the Bulls on the board, but moments later, Hill completed her sweep of Golenko at the fourth flight. Hill never trailed, winning each set by a 6-2 score.
Chiricosta systematically defeated Stoyanova, losing just one game in the process. The BG sophomore got off to a fast start, with two aces in her first game, on the way to a 6-1 win in her opening set. She topped that result in the second set, winning six consecutive games to clinch the second-flight match and give her team that all-important fourth point.
The Bulls came up winners in each of the last two matches, with Markovic defeating Reuland at the third flight and Candanoza topping senior Jessica Easdale at the sixth. But, for UB it was too little, too late, as the Falcons improved to 2-0 in league action for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
In a match that did not count in the final scoring, Johnson defeated Shir Aharon in the blink of an eye. The BG junior lost just one game, with her singles match concluding well before any of the other six. Including her doubles match with Hill, Johnson won a total of 20 games and lost just three on Friday.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday afternoon (March 31), hosting defending MAC Tournament champion Akron. The BGSU-UA match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather and/or high winds, the Falcons and Zips would meet at 1:00 p.m. at the PTC.
