BGSU faces Buffalo & defending MAC tourney champ Akron
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, after opening Mid-American Conference play with a win at Keefe Courts last weekend, plays two more home duals this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean play a Friday (March 30) match against the University at Buffalo, then host the University of Akron, the defending MAC Tournament champion, on Saturday (March 31). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe, weather permitting.

In the event of inclement weather, the match(es) would be held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
The Falcons are 5-5 in dual-match play, and BGSU is 1-0 in MAC action after last weekend's 7-0 victory over Northern Illinois. BG won at all six singles flights and all three doubles levels, capturing the MAC opener for the third consecutive year.
Senior Jessica Easdale, juniors Maddy Eccleston, Katie Grubb and Mary Hill and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland all were in the Falcons' singles lineup vs. NIU, and all six came away with victories.
Hill and Reuland each are now 7-2 in MAC singles matches in their respective BGSU careers, while Chiricosta has a record of 6-3 in conference singles play since coming to BG.
In doubles action, the Falcons' teams consisted of the two sophs, Chiricosta and Reuland, at the top flight, with Eccleston and Grubb at flight number two and Hill teaming with junior Jade Johnson at the third level.
Chiricosta and Reuland are 10-5 as a team in their BGSU careers, but the NIU match marked the first time they had competed together in a MAC dual. Likewise, the Eccleston/Grubb and Hill/Johnson duos had never played together in conference competition before Saturday.
The NIU match marked the Falcons' first dual at Keefe Courts in nearly two years. BGSU had competed at Keefe in the season-opening BGSU Invitational back on Sept. 16-17, 2011, but last season saw BG play four April matches at the PTC due to forecasts of precipitation and/or high winds. Prior to the NIU contest, BG's last dual at Keefe came on April 23, 2009, against Akron.
Buffalo enters Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 5-7, and the Bulls are 1-1 in MAC play. Last weekend, UB split a pair of 6-1 contests at home, defeating Ball State while falling to Miami. Prior to Saturday's loss to the RedHawks, the Bulls had won four of five matches, and UB had gone 5-2 after dropping the first four dual matches of the season. Last year, head coach Kathy Twist's club went 6-13 overall and 2-6 in MAC action.
Akron is 15-2 on the season, heading into a Friday match at Western Michigan. UA won 12 consecutive matches to begin the dual-match schedule, before suffering a 4-3 loss at Brown on Feb. 26. After bouncing back with two more wins, the Zips fell by a 4-3 count to Miami in last weekend's MAC opener. UA swept Ball State the following day.
Akron's doubles team of Prang Pantusart and Zara Harutyunyan was ranked 80th in the nation in the March 13 ITA rankings. Last year, the Zips went 20-5 overall and 7-1 in the MAC. UA finished second in the league regular-season standings, but won three consecutive matches en route to the conference tourney title.
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 12-3, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Brown and Orange captured a 5-2 road victory in last season's meeting (March 25, 2011). The visiting team has won the last three matchups, including a 5-2 UB win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center two years ago (April 24, 2010). BGSU captured the first nine series meetings, UB won the next two, and the Falcons then picked up two-straight victories before Buffalo's win two years ago.
BGSU leads Akron, 25-6, in that series, but the Zips have won four-straight meetings. Last season, the Falcons took an early lead, but UA rallied back for a 5-2 win in Northeast Ohio (March 26, 2011). In the last meeting in Northwest Ohio, the Zips posted a 6-1 win at Keefe Courts two years ago (April 23, 2010), before downing the Falcons in the MAC Tournament at Western Michigan, 4-1, a week later (April 30, 2010). BGSU had won 16-straight matchups with the Zips before a 6-1 UA win two years ago (April 10, 2009). Prior to that match, UA's only two series wins had come in back-to-back seasons, 1991-92 and 1992-93. BGSU is 13-3 in home matches, 10-2 on the road and 2-1 in neutral-site contests vs. the Zips.
The Falcons were 15-8 overall a year ago, and Dean's club finished with a 5-3 MAC mark. The Brown and Orange placed fourth in the nine-team league last fall. This season, the Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the league in the preseason coaches poll. Akron was picked to win the league's regular-season and tournament titles in 2012, while Buffalo was predicted to place seventh in the MAC.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons hit the road for two contests. BG will meet last season's regular-season champion, Miami, on April 6, before heading to Ball State the following day.
