Falcons earn fifth seed for next weekend's MAC Championships
The Bowling Green State University tennis team closed the regular season with a 4-3 win on the road against the University of Toledo Saturday afternoon (April 21). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in MAC play. The Rockets drop to 9-12 and 2-6, respectively.
BGSU has clinched the fifth seed for next weekend's nine-team MAC Championships, which will be held in DeKalb, Ill. The tournament begins Thursday (April 26), and the Falcons will play a quarterfinal-round match against Eastern Michigan University on Friday (April 27).
The Rockets, for the sixth consecutive match, were playing with just five players, meaning that BGSU won the third doubles and sixth singles flights by default.
The teams split the two doubles matches on the courts, as the Rockets won at the top flight and the Falcons at the second. UT's duo of Kelsey Anonsen and Lexy Pitt downed BGSU sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland at the number-one flight, 8-3. The Rockets led throughout, and won three-straight games after BG had closed to within 5-3.
The second-flight match, however, went to the BGSU tandem of juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson. The Falcons trailed early, but won four consecutive games to take a 5-2 lead over UT's Pia Rygh and Amanda Border. The Rockets closed to within 5-4, but could never quite catch up, and the Hill/Johnson duo finished out an 8-6 win.
After earning the doubles point, the Falcons quickly picked up a second point with the default win at the sixth flight. And, head coach Penny Dean's two sophs won their matches to give the Falcons an insurmountable lead.
Chiricosta never trailed in earning a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rygh at the second flight. The Avon Lake native took a 4-1 lead in the opening set en route to the victory, then cruised to a 3-0 lead in the second set and never looked back.
Reuland downed Chrissy Coffman by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 in third-flight action. Reuland captured the first three games of the opening set, then saw Coffman get within a game on two occasions before closing out the set. In the second set, the Rocket sophomore won the first three games, and Coffman was up by a 4-1 count before Reuland won the final five games in a row.
For Reuland, the win was her sixth singles victory in a row and her team-leading 24th of the season. Both Reuland and Chiricosta finished the regular season with 6-2 singles records in MAC matches.
Each of the other three Falcon singles competitors lost narrow opening sets. At the fourth flight, Pitt defeated Hill in a first-set tiebreaker. A back-and-forth affair saw each player win several consecutive games before Pitt captured the 7-6 first set. She then captured the final five games of the second set for the win.
At the top flight, junior Maddy Eccleston fell behind Anonsen early in each set and could not recover. In the first set, Eccleston dropped the first two games and battled back within a single game four times, but could never break Anonsen. That set ended with a 6-4 final. Anonsen then captured the first three games of the second set to take control.
The final match to finish came at the fifth flight, where Border won a pair of close sets over Johnson. The first set saw the BG junior drop the first three games before battling back to narrow the deficit. But, Border won the set by a 7-5 result. In the second set, Johnson took leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before Border surged ahead, 4-3. Johnson tied the match, but Border won each of the next two lengthy games to clinch the win.
The Falcons, as mentioned, will play a quarterfinal-round match vs. Eastern Michigan in the MAC Championships in DeKalb, Ill., on Friday (April 27). According to the MAC web site, the No. 4 vs. No. 5 match will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time (11:00 a.m. ET).
With one conference regular-season match set for Sunday afternoon, the tournament bracket will not be set until the conclusion of that match. Check back to BGSUFalcons.com Sunday night for the most up-to-date information on the MAC Tennis Championships.
