BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- One last hazard remains in the 2011-12 season for the Bowling Green State University women's golf team, and they will clear it this weekend when they travel to Fishers, Ind. for the 14th annual Mid-American Conference Championships. The 54-hole event will take place from Friday through Sunday (April 27-29).
The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club will be the host of this year's tournament. This will be the second time that the Hawthorns has hosted the MAC Championships; the first was in 2010, when BGSU finished eighth overall (983).
In 2011, the tournament was held in Nashport, Ohio at the Longaberger Golf Club. The Falcons finished ninth after shooting a composite 1,006. Bailey Arnold (240) and Paula DiFrancesco (264) are the only two players from last year's five-player squad to return for the 2012 event.
The Falcons' lineup for the 2012 championship shapes up like this: Shelby Wilson is the #1 seed, with Arnold slotted at #2. Kelsey Benson will play in the #3 spot, and DiFrancesco will be fourth. Freshman Patricia Holt rounds out the squad as the #5 seed. This will be the first MAC Championships for Wilson, Benson and Holt.
BGSU currently ranks seventh among the nine MAC teams in scoring average (316.40) but had a season-low of 304 earlier this month at the EKU Colonel Classic.
Individually, Wilson leads the team with a 78.25 average. She needs a 241 this weekend to break the BGSU freshman record for scoring average in a single season and a 236 to earn BGSU's all-time record.
Arnold is second on the team with a 78.95 average. She is the BGSU career average leader (79.43, min. 40 rounds) and also has a shot at the school record for single-season average. She and Wilson have combined for eight of BGSU's 11 individual top-20 finishes this season.
Benson has competed in four tournaments as a sophomore but has played her best golf of the season of late, including a 167 (82-85) at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational and victories at the Spring Challenge Cup versus Ohio University.
DiFrancesco, who will be competing in her final tournament as a Falcon, is third on the team with a career-best 80.10 average. She has a career-low round of 71 and a top-ten finish on the books this season, and she tied with Arnold for the team's best round and total score (75; 167) at The Preview last October, which was held at this year's championship course.
Holt has also played in all of BGSU's tournaments this season, and she sports an 81.95 average. However, she has also played her best golf this spring and has finished as high as 22nd (Low Country Intercollegiate).
Bowling Green golfers will be among the last to tee off in the first round on Friday.
Players will tee off from the first hole beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing in ten minute intervals. The Falcons will be playing with golfers from Northern Illinois and Akron. Holt begins at 10:10 and is followed by DiFrancesco, Benson and Arnold. Wilson will tee off at 10:50 in the last group.
Toledo, Western Michigan and Ball State are paired together with tee times from 8:30 to 9:10, while players from Kent State, Ohio and Eastern Michigan will begin between 9:20 and 10:00.
