Falcons fall to top-seeded Miami Saturday afternoon
The Bowling Green State University tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to Miami University Saturday (April 28). The RedHawks, the top-seeded team in the Mid-American Conference Championships, downed the Falcons in semifinal-round action inside the Vaughan Athletic Center.
With the win, Miami improves to 15-9 on the season, and the RedHawks advance to Sunday's championship match. MU will face the second-seeded University of Akron in the final.
The Falcons see the 2011-12 season come to an end with a record of 10-10.
"Give credit to Miami," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "They didn't give an inch, and they played the important points better than BG, for the most part.
"That having been said, the match was closer than the 4-0 final score would indicate. All of our players fought hard, and we were very close in several cases."
Just as in the teams' regular-season match in Oxford, the doubles portion of Saturday's action was closely contested. The RedHawks drew first blood with an 8-2 victory at the top flight, but the other two matches came right down to the wire.
At the third flight, the MU team of Christiana Raymond and Alix Thurman fought back from a large deficit, surging past juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson for an 8-6 victory to clinch the doubles point.
The second-flight match, between MU's Nimisha Mohan/Riekie Honiball tandem and the BGSU duo of juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb, was halted with the teams tied at 7-7.
In singles, the RedHawks picked up victories at the bottom three flights. Thurman's match was the first to finish, as she downed Johnson at the fifth flight. Raymond followed suit with a win over Hill at flight number four. Hill won four games in the opening set and three in the second, but Raymond outlasted the Falcon junior to give the RedHawks three points on the day.
When Christine Guerrazzi closed out a win over senior Jessica Easdale at the sixth flight, the 'Hawks had the victory.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline, the Falcons were enjoying some success at the other three flights. MU's Stephanie Danesis had posted a 7-5 victory over Nikki Chiricosta in a narrow first set at the top flight, but the BG soph had responded by taking a 5-2 lead in the second set before play was halted.
At the second flight, Eccleston had captured the opening set over Honiball, 6-3, and the two competitors were embroiled in a tight second set when the match was abandoned.
Mohan had won a 6-4 opening set over Reuland at the third flight, but led by just a game (4-3) in the second set when play was suspended.
The RedHawks advance to the championship match for the fourth-straight season. Miami won the league tournament in both 2009 and '10 before suffering a 4-3 loss to Akron in last year's final.
"Maddy regained top form today and was playing very well," said Dean. "Nikki was battling back in her match after a narrow loss in the opening set, and that came after a doubles point in which the final two matches could have gone either way.
"Again, credit to Miami; they went undefeated in regular-season play for a reason. But, I am very proud of my team for the effort they displayed this weekend. We will definitely miss Jessica next season, but I look forward to the rest of the team returning, along with two very talented newcomers."
Six of this year's seven players have eligibility remaining, and Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker will add two freshmen to the fold. Katie Brozovich (Clarkston, Mich.) and Drew Fillis (Toledo, Ohio) signed National Letters of Intent in November.
