Box Scores: Game One Game Two
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team split a doubleheader with the visiting Ohio Bobcats on Sunday afternoon, falling in game one before taking game two in walk-off fashion. Ohio used a seven-run ninth inning to take command of game one, going on to post an 11-0 win to even up the series at one win apiece. The Falcons would bounce back in game two, as Fred Sharp would scamper home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth for an 8-7 victory. With the split, the Falcons earn the series win, taking two-out-of-three from the second place Ohio Bobcats.
Game One
Ohio got off to a quick start in the first game of Sunday's double-dip, taking a 1-0 lead after just one inning against Falcon hurler Ethan McKenney. Dan Schmidt singled home Tyler Wells with two outs in the first inning to put the Bobcats ahead for good in the game.
Ohio would add a run in the top of the third and two more in the sixth to knock McKenney out of the game after five-plus innings pitched. The Falcons continued to give the opposition extra outs on Sunday, committing three errors in the first game.
The Falcons struggled to get the bats going in game one, as Ohio outhit the Falcons 18-8. Andrew Kubuski was the lone bright spot for the Falcons in the game, going 3-for-3. He also walked one time as he was on base all four times in game one.
Ohio pitcher Jason Moulton stifled the Falcon attack, going all nine innings for a complete game shutout. He improved to 5-2 with the win, while McKenney fell to 1-7 with the loss.
Game Two
Patrick Martin was just what the doctor ordered in game two, as he gave the Falcons stability from the mound in game two. After struggling to get the offense going in game one, the Falcons were helped by a first inning error on the Bobcats. On that play, Lancaster would reach first after the throw from the third baseman pulled Jake Madsen off the base at first. Jake Thomas, who had walked to leadoff the game, would come all the way around from second base to score the first run of the game on that play.
Martin would retire the first nine Bobcat batters in order in game two. The Bobcats would get an unearned run off of Martin in the fourth, knocking two hits in the inning. With Ohio runners on first and third and nobody out, Jake Madsen would hit a fly ball to left field. After Kubuski recorded the out on the fly out, he would gun the runner down at home, attempting to score from third to give the Falcons two outs. Martin would get out of the inning from there, and the game would remain tied at one.
The Falcons would break their offensive drought in the bottom of the fifth, as Kubuski and Losby would single with one out to get the inning started. After they both advanced a base on a wild pitch by Ohio starting pitcher Seth Steich, Patrick Lancaster singled both runners home. He would advance to second on the throw home from Bobcat centerfielder Ethan Newton. The next batter, Jeremy Shay, would belt a two-run home run to deep left field, giving the Falcons a 5-1 lead after five innings.
Ohio would take the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits and one Falcon error to take a 6-5 lead. The big blow of the inning was a two out, three-run home run by freshman outfielder Tyler Wells, putting Ohio on top.
The Falcons would take lead back in the bottom of the eighth, when T.J. Losby would get a big two-out double to score two Falcons, giving Bowling Green a 7-6 lead.
Ohio would even up the score in the top of the ninth. But, with a runner on third base and one out, Jesse Rait would gun down Newton at home to end the top of the ninth with a double play. Newton had been trying to score on a fly ball to right, but Rait's throw would be right on the line, and catcher Jeremy Shay would apply a perfect tag to keep the score tied at seven.
The ninth inning would go the Falcons way, as Jeremy Shay led things off with a single through the left side. After a Pitzulo single,—a high chop over the first baseman's head—Logan Walker was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out.
Ohio veteran skipper Joe Carbone would bring Newton into the infield from his usual centerfield position, giving the Bobcats a fifth infielder. Brandon Howard would line out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded. With Jake Thomas up, Bobcat pitcher Tyler Stage would throw a ball in the dirt. The ball would get away from Ohio catcher Cody Gaertner, and pinch-runner, Fred Sharp would hustle home for the game-winning run.
The Falcons and Bobcats each had 11 hits in game two of the doubleheader, as the Falcons took the series with the thrilling, walk-off, wild pitch win.
Shay, Losby, and Lancaster each had two RBI in game two, while Kubuski, Losby, and Shay had multi-hit games for BGSU.
With the split on the afternoon, the Falcons move their overall record to 18-25 on the season. The Falcons now stand at 7-11 in Mid-American Conference play. Ohio is 23-20, 12-6 in the MAC with today's split.
The Falcons will take a break for final exams during the week, and will resume MAC play next weekend at Eastern Michigan. The first pitch between the Falcons and Eagles will take place on Friday night (May 4) at 6 pm.
