BGSU makes a run at the RedHawks, but the defending MAC regular-season champs prevail
The Bowling Green State University tennis team gave Miami University a scare, but the defending league champions were able to hold off the Falcons, 5-2, Friday afternoon (April 6). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at Hepburn Courts.
With the win, Miami improves to 10-9 overall and 5-0 in MAC matches. The RedHawks, who have won three consecutive MAC regular-season titles, have won 30-straight conference regular season contests.
BGSU dropped to 6-7 and 2-2, respectively.
The 5-2 final is somewhat misleading, as the outcome of the match was in doubt for nearly four hours. The Falcons began the day by taking the doubles point, with two of the three matches going right down to the wire.
At the number-one doubles flight, sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland rolled along to an 8-3 win over the RedHawks' Stephanie Danesis and Alix Thurman. MU equalized with a narrow victory at the second flight, as Riekie Honiball and Christine Guerrazzi captured the last three games to pull out a 9-7 win over Falcon juniors Maddy Eccleston and Katie Grubb.
The opening point came down to flight number three, where BGSU juniors Mary Hill and Jade Johnson won a pair of games to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 7-6 lead over MU's Christiana Raymond and Nimisha Mohan. The RedHawk duo evened the contest at 7-7, but Hill and Johnson captured the next two games to take the match and the doubles point.
When singles play began, however, the RedHawks won the first three matches, all in straight sets, to take a 3-1 lead. Thurman downed Grubb at the fifth flight, while Mohan defeated Hill at flight number four. When, Honiball topped Eccleston at the number-two flight, Miami was just one point away from victory.
That point did not come easily, however, as each of the remaining three matches contained a great deal of drama. At the top flight, Chiricosta won a 6-3 decision over Danesis, before the Miami senior responded with a 6-1 win in the second.
The third set went to a tiebreaker, with Chiricosta surging to an early lead, but Danesis roaring back with six unanswered points to take the lead. The BG sophomore rallied with a point to even things at 6-6, but Danesis scored the last two points for an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker and a 7-6 victory in that third set.
The remaining two matches each saw the competitors split the first two sets. At the sixth flight, Guerrazzi won the opening set by a 6-3 count, only to see Falcon senior Jessica Easdale rally for a second-set win. Easdale took a 3-1 lead in that set, then saw Guerrazzi come back for a 6-5 lead. But, the BG senior won the next game, then captured the tiebreaker by a 7-3 result. Guerrazzi, however, came from behind to win the third set, 6-4.
At the third flight, Reuland won a marathon first set, after splitting the first 12 games with Raymond. The tiebreaker, like the set, was a nip-and-tuck affair, but the BG soph pulled out a 9-7 win.
Raymond rallied for a 6-3 victory in the second set. With the match already decided, the third-flight match went to a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, and Reuland came away with a 10-6 win.
Reuland's two wins on Friday give her a team-leading total of 39 this season to date. She paces BGSU in both singles (19) and doubles (20) victories this year. Chiricosta now has 35 total wins on the season, tying her with Eccleston for second on the Falcons, while Hill has 34 wins this year to date.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean and assistant Cindy Yonker remain on the road, heading to Muncie, Ind., for a Saturday afternoon (April 7) match vs. Ball State. BGSU then steps outside of MAC play for one last time in the regular season, hosting Valparaiso on Tuesday (April 10) afternoon at Keefe Courts. Start time for both the BSU and VU matches is 1:00 p.m.
